Gear position gauge indicator?

What?

Ok... this reminds me of seeing shifter platforms with a switch attached.  The switch is activated by a nub on the transmission selector rod, IIRC.  I believe(d) that it was wired to the ignition and/or seatbelt safety system.  Car had to be in neutral or it wouldn't start?  Am I way off-base?

My car only came with the wiring that crossed over the transmission support in the rear. No switch.

That's a blind cap from an '80s Volkswagen or Audi placed in the center console. Nothing spectacular.

+1

Let’s be clear.  This item was not installed by the factory on ANY 2002.  It was not an option.  It did not exist when the last ‘02 rolled off the assembly line.

If someone removed it from an ‘02, then someone added it to that ‘02 long after the ‘02 left the factory.

Steve

Paul,

You’re referring to the neutral safety switch found on some ‘02’s.  This item has nothing to do with ‘02’s.

Best regards,

Steve

Some 02's?  I'm curious which ones.

Ones with more than two pedals.

;-)

I don’t have a clear picture, Paul.  My ‘73 appears to have had one: the cabling is in place, but the switch is missing.  I can’t picture one under my ‘76 but I haven’t looked up into the tunnel for years...

Best regards,

Steve

Maybe, Ray....

But it might also be “Ones with more than one pedal...”  I don’t believe neutral safety switches were limited to manual transmissions.

Best regards,

Steve

Likewise.  I think maybe the factory stopped installing them at some point, but left the wiring intact.  Or they were scuttled when people removed all the safety belt warning wiring.
