Early up to 73 shallow grill set

Deep grilles came first: from 1966 into the 1972 model year. The shallow grilles appeared on or just after January 1, 1972 and, therefore, represent late U.S. round taillight cars only — some 1972 and all 1973 models.

These are, indeed, shallow side grilles, much rarer than deep grilles because they were only employed for a year and a half, employed only on U.S.-spec cars, and went NLA decades ago (whereas the deep grilles have remained more-or-less in production).

That “on or shortly after January 1, 1972” language was recently added to our grille vocabulary.  Like many, until recently, I believed the shallow grilles were introduced ca. April 1972 or with the 1973 model in September 1972.

Regards,

Steve

Yes they will fit all years from 68-73 but if you decide to use them on 68-71 cars then you will have to have the correct headlight buckets or else the lights will slightly stick out of these grille.

Not exactly. All the U.S. headlight buckets are the same. With the earlier deep grilles, 1966 through early 1972 calendar year, the headlight sits back from the leading edge of the headlight surround. An asymmetric metal filler strip dresses up the gap between the sealed beam retaining ring and the leading edge of the headlight surround. With the later (U.S.-only) shallow grilles, early 1972 calendar year through July 1973, the outer lower corner of the headlight does, indeed, stand slightly proud of the headlight surround. The asymmetric metal filler strip is no longer needed. Same headlight bucket.

Below, in the background, is the U.S.-spec headlight retaining ring (3 screws). These vary in finish (chromed on the earliest cars, anodized aluminum later, zinc or silver cadmium plated still later, and powder coated black for square taillight cars).

In the foreground is an asymmetric filler strip, used with all deep grilles. Most I’ve seen were anodized aluminum, to match the front side grilles. Maybe some early ones were chromed.

A feathery light-gray gasket — now virtually gone on most examples I’ve seen recently — filled a small gap between the asymmetric filler strip and the grille’s headlight surround.

The asymmetric filler strip locks into the front of the retaining ring: that big gap in the filler strip seen below disappears when the filler strip is locked into the retaining ring.
