So....if the firewall pad is backordered, there are a LOT of parts that attach on top of it.  Not good!

If you need a nudge for the hard line replacement... do ‘em all. I am a noob on this and several years ago when I pulled all of the lines, for some brain dead reason I tossed all except short sections from rear suspension member to  brake cylinders

Five years later when my restoration was “done”, guess where brake fluid gushed when I was bleeding brakes?

There was a tiny hairline crack in the flare!!

Plus this shit stops the car when all of your hard work to “ make it go fast” comes together!!??

Forgot to mention about the taping of the wiring harnesses.

If you want OE (sort of) you can get the cloth from BMW, but it is spendy.

The cloth tape from 3M is incorrect, the TESA from Amazon is.

Wiring harness provided by BMW (which are NLA) used vinyl tape, which of course, is wrong.

Note too that most of the harnesses use the 17mm tape, BUT the run that services the headlights, and all parts that are a few wires' bundle use a 10mm tape. Some windings overlap and some are wound "candy cane" style. Look on your harness to see.

The other thing is to remember after you clean the wires, look closely for any cracks in the insulation, as it will likely have corrosion. If you can, note where the bends are, and wrap your new tape accordingly. Many times, the harness is more difficult to bend to shape if the tape is too tight or overlapped too much. Heating the whole harness to over 100 deg. F also helps, particularly when you go to re-install it.

Since it's been brought up.

Yes, I make the hardlines.  IE is one of the resellers.  To toot the firewall pad a bit .... the firewall pad is being finished and is deigned to be BETTER than the original in terms of insolation and keeping crud out from behind it (while still appearing correct) vs. something produced for a quick buck.  To be very honest, this is a part being developed by a good friend, he should have some numbers very shortly.

Even though I'm making more bits (and have some REALLY fun stuff in the pipelines) my intent is not to be on here hawking my wares.  I will likely post something in the classifieds, but will only address questions as they pop up periodically.

Hi,

Let me know when those pads are ready.  I'll buy one!

Coming back to this, the numbers didn't quite make sense to setup this up through resale, so the gentleman is going to sell them directly.

Here's the information for those interested.

LHD only I assume?

I was wondering that but I assume it couldn’t be THAT different. Not so different that a bit of cutting and modification couldn’t sort.

To get back to the OP.

When you unwrap your harness, use loose zip cable ties at all of the junctions to hold it together and in place. If you leave them loose then you can add and remove wires as required.

If you you have any sections of wiring that need replacement at the ends where they may be oil soaked or hardened then what I like to do is cut off the damaged piece and then splice a new section into the wire in the middle of the harness. Use wire that is at least the same gauge, solder and then heat shrink. This way you don’t need to buy a dozen different factory wire with tracer combinations. The splice is hidden within the loom and nobody is the wiser. Couple that with original style uninsulated crimp terminals and plastic covers and it will look very factory.

Simeon,  Great idea on th esplicing.  I'll try that.  I haven't started unwrapping yet, so I don't know how bad it will be.  I definitely want to include the new lead from terminal #2 to the condenser coil in the loom and there are a few other wires in the engine bay that have been added in, probably because of broken loom wires.  Should  Just another challenge..... :-)

That is what the PO of my car did, but wasn't tidy about it; so don't do it that poorly.

After buying one of the last (front) harnesses from BMW two years ago (NIB) I decided to make my own reproduction harnesses (front, rear, etc) as I wanted to add quite a few circuits; it was just easier and less time consuming to make it from scratch.

Either way, it is always easier to manipulate if the harness is warmed up and flexible. Grab yer heat gun!

With regards to the insulation, for us that don't do Facebook, what is the price, are they available, and how long will they be available?

Thanks.

$349 plus $40 S/H (lower 48 only)

I just checked his Facebook page. He makes 4 units/week. Lead time is a couple of weeks.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
