Wiring and electic fuel pump questions

I have a '73 Tii  that I just pulled the heater box out of to get rid of some smelly critters.  I just reinstalled the box and went to check that I secured all the hoses etc. correctly before putting the rest of the car together, but now I have no fuel delivery.  When the key is inserted and turned part way on there is a significant buzzing noise coming from the electric fuel pump under the car near the gas tank.  It seems odd that it worked fine a week ago when I started the project, and now it doesn't.  I am wondering if:

  1. I got caulking on the ground wires (there were two of them attached the drivers side mounting bolt of the heater box).  I cleaned them but maybe not well enough
  2. Other than a bunch of old stereo wires that are not in use, there are two other suspect wires that I didn't take a picture of before removing and  am not sure if they go anywhere.  Maybe they go somewhere (they are green/white and green/brown).  See picture; any idea if these go anywhere useful and whether they may be causing the fuel pump to fail
  3. Maybe it was just time for the 44 year old pump to go, and the timing is just weird.

Any thoughts on where the two wires might go, and/or what may be causing the buzzing noise and failure to push fuel?  The buzzing sound was not evident prior to last week when I pulled the heater box.

Thanks in advance.

.... it was time for your 44-year-old pump to go.   But just to be sure,  check the voltage at the pump.  I am surprised it lasted that long.  I have gone through two (crappy ones at that) in the past 4 months. Now I have a proper one installed.

Pump may not be 44 years old, as records only go back 12 years.  But it looks like it has been there for a long time.  Any recommendations on crappy pumps to keep away from, or better yet, what brand have you installed that you like; and/or where did you purchase it?  TIA.

what makes this one more than 2x more expensive?

Just a guess, but the OEM old stock version might have a plug and play electrical connection, where the new version may require modifying the stock wiring?
