Feeler: Performance M10 engine

Recommended Posts

From a recently-purchased ITB race car* I pulled a freshly-built, running 2.0 liter M10 engine - E12 head with piano top pistons, I reckon somewhere between 9 - 9.5:1 C/R with upgraded* camshaft. Given the rules of ITB, I'd call it a performance / hot-rod / track-day engine. It currently has a downdraft carb but I could see this as a sidedraft engine.  (*The updated camshaft shows the car was ready to be run outside of SCCA / ITB class).

Anyone looking? I could sell outright, or do the install here in Southern California.

I pulled the oil pan to check bearings, #3 rod looks great (most-often the first to show wear). Rods have been balanced and shot peened, crankshaft shows signs of balancing, looks like some nice work in there. Bore scope reveals fresh hone marks and piano top pistons. It's an Ireland camshaft grind on a billet, but no ID markings so I need to measure lift - by the lobe, I'd say 292 or 302 degree.

This will be on my engine test/run stand within the week, will determine price and then put it up officially for sale. PM with any early interest. -KB

Ha! I was only (partially) joking.  I would love to buy that engine from you Ken but we are currently in the process of moving interstate.  My wife would kill me if I had a large crate full of M10 goodness turn up in the middle of packing up (not to mention the money).

Maybe I will try you again in 6 months or so and keep dreaming in the meantime. Good luck with the sale!

Morning KB, for the past few months I have been planning / researching a high performance M10 racing build and will probably get it started in earnest this spring, so I do have interest in your already done / started engine, please keep me in mind when you figure out a price, and it would be shipped to East coast, MA., thank you, Richard

I will keep you in mind, Richard. If you get a moment, send a message (or post it here) about the racing engine application, rules, build specs etc you’ve been looking at. -KB

I think outside of SCCA, Marshal ... anyone would have noticed the 38/38, and then started poking around.

(‘Round these parts, most ITB cars have left that class and moved into racing under the rules of other sanctioning bodies like VARA, etc - Jeff Ireland helped create a class for those cars years ago.) -KB

I was just commenting on/poking fun at the previous owner.....you said it was an "ITB car", with a downdraft.  ITB cars are supposed to have a 32/36 downdraft..you didn't mention a 38/38.  that would be obvious..

good on Jeff for starting a place for these cars to run.  SCCA ITB around here still gets over a half dozen 02's running.  we paddock our E30 with them.  great group who have been running together for decades. they even let me come over and help fix/maintain the high end 02 machinery!  nothing quite like replacing brake shoes for a racer with 10 minutes to the race while he is suiting up and belting in...too much fun!  :D

the engine looks like it will be a nice add to someones 02!

I’m with you, Marshall ... I’d be curious to tear it down completely, to measure check the remaining items which were supposed to be ITB but actually aren’t (I have seen a few of their tricks in the last few years). -KB

You're doing it wrong...  Have it shipped to the new addy, so it's there when you get there...  "I don't know honey, it was just here.  Maybe the previous owner..."

My wife wouldn't buy it either, but it's fun to think about.

Hi KB, my project is not for any specific racing division, more over just a high performance street engine, I should not have used the word " racing " in my initial reply. But still, before I dive into my build, I wanted to see if buying yours made more cents :-) than me starting from scratch. Even though I am kind of excited to dig into my build project I will wait to you get your engine up on the stand and check it out and then see what you will be asking, thank you, Rich
