Door locks

Would like to be able to lock my doors - currently cannot.

Can new ones be bought?

Better to recondition the current ones?

Do used ones come up for sale?

Are the 02 lock mechanisms the same as for the e21's?

thanks,

Yes. There's not much that goes wrong with them. Pull them and see.

Of course.

Are your doors keyed alike?  Remove the door handles and clean the locks, also remove the door mechanisms  (on the door) while you are at it, clean them and lube them up thoroughly.   The locks can be stiff because the door mechanisms are sticky.

Also while you are at it, replace the grommets to stop the clang clang of the door.  You will need three per door. Trust me, it is totally worth it.   One by the handle, one in the door mech and one for the door lock pull.  They are super cheap.

I had the same issue with my passenger door and trunk.  I took all door handles and trunk to a local locksmith, he not only repaired the locks but matched the key for all three and made copies.  He also cleaned up and oiled everything.  Nice having one key for everything again.

They're not--on a 2002 you push a button in to unlatch the door from the outside; on an E21 you pull the handle to unlatch the door, so the mechanisms work exactly backwards.

You didn't tell us what your door locks aren't doing.  Are they

  • not functioning at all (i.e. the door won't even stay closed)
  • the door won't lock at all even with a key that works
  • the door won't lock from the inside when you push the button down
  • they're really hard to close and latch properly--takes a hard slam for the door to close and latch.

Understand that 2002 doors can't be slam locked (push the inside button down with the door open and then close the door).  They must be key locked ( both doors), unlike later BMWs.

Those locks are very sturdy--hardly wear out but do get gummed up with dirt over the years.  Give us more specific info on your woes so we can provide more specific assistance

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
