Transmission(s) CR 5sp and Others......

Happy friggin Friday.....!!!

Took my CR 5sp gear box in to have it looked at before I put it back up in the car just after Christmas.  Got the report today:

5th Gear (marginal), 4th Gear/ 3d Gear (shot), 2nd Gear (good), Reverse Gear (non existant/wasted...go figure?).

This was something of a Frankenberry of transmissions oddly enough (clearly from not when Alpina was running the car), has a 242/4 housing with a street version CR section added in.  Really it would probably be worse if they were the race version gears, since those are totally non-existent (break em, make em).  Having my parts manager contact at BMW see what can be had.

Options;  find another 235/5 cr box, find a 245/10 cr box (better option than the 235/5 probably), staight cut motorsport dog gear set (expensive...sh&t)....has anyone had any experience with Metric Mechanic's 242 CR 4speed (or heard anyone with experience with that box.....and those aren't cheap at over $4k).  Not tops on my option list but need to consider everything.

It is.  I was just about to send them a note, they have straight cut gear sets for the 5sp (dog and synchro).  Six grand + shipping to and from, then installing back into the trans.  Figure with all of that $7500, a real ass-biter so-to-speak.  Straight cut gears are louder than *H#(H(&^%, but then it is a race car already so whatever.  Huge pile of dough I had not been anticipating spending, thoughts of the PVGP are out the window with this news unfortunately.

Ouch.  There's a guy in the UK that sells rebuilt 235/5s (and others) on racecarsdirect.com pretty frequently.  That might be cheaper, or at least faster.  I can't vouch for their work, but they seem to always have one available.

I surf that site and had seen it but forgotten about it, worth an inquiry for sure.  Afraid of what the number is but, it is what it is, not sure who said it here recently...where there is a will there is a way....or something like that....Tx

Since we're on the subject, are there gears available to turn the wide ratio 5sp into a closer ratio 5sp?

Oh, and Ray.  I've ordered several things from Blunt recently and none of it has come with ice cream.  Just sayin.

Dave.

'76, totally stock. Completely.

I will know next week what is available from BMW as far as CR 5 speed bits.  I know that some stuff you can get and others not so much (not helpful I know) and even less helpful how it is possible to cross over an OD to a CR box, if it were feasible it would be expensive, gears along for what is available are +$500 ea based on what you can see on Real OEM.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
