'74 Tii - Legit?

Plenty of folks here will question the seller describing a car with incorrectly painted hardware in the engine bay a "total restoration." Those little things often point to other shortcuts or short-comings in the work the car received. Wait for more comments... -KB

note: If you're still looking in a couple of months, look me up; I'm doing a far-better job than that car received on a '74 matching-numbers Polaris (silver) Tii here on the West Coast, including a conversion to chrome bumpers a/k/a Euro style.

a snorkle does not disqualify it from being a factory Tii...you'll need the vin numbers to veriify the authenticity...i'd call the seller and get the info you want/need to know

maybe tii bimmer knows the car if he's sure it had front end damage...i don't see evidence of front end damage

It’s got a snorkel nose. Check the VIN in all four places. Front end damage in its history at the least.

I only know of three places

1) Engine block

2) Passenger side engine bay fender area

3) Steering column upper pad placard.

4) ?

All in all it looks like a decent car with typical low budget restoration issues like over spray and things out of place etc... Seen worse go for more.

But what do I know?

#4 would be the actual VIN plate.

Oh yeah!

Aduh i'm an idiot sometimes. Think it comes from hangin around this forum for too long.

I could also revise history by stating I meant "in the passenger side engine bay area" included the riveted VIN tag, but I won't go that low. I'm gonna stick with my shizzy and own it.

My 74tii is vin 2782278 and is Fjord Blue (great color!) with Gobi tan interior, and has the same turbine style wheels on it.  It was built in July '74.  It stayed in San Diego for 30 years, then Santa Fe, NM for 10 years.  It had a lot of performance upgrades like 5 speed and improved suspension.  Mine has A/C, and bumpers were converted to the smaller euro style bumpers.  I paid a little more than this asking price 2 years ago.  I didn't personally look at it, but talked with the bmw mechanic that  had taken car of it for 10 years.

I like the car so much I'm currently spending as much as I paid to have it cosmetically restored.  It had only a slight amount of rust on the drive's side rocker panel.  But, there was quite a bit of bondo in the doors and fenders.  I'm still glad I have the car, and hindsight indicates I could have bought a better car for the same money, but I could have done a whole lot worse, too!  I bought it to drive and enjoy, and not to spruce up and re-sale.

If you are really interested in the car, have someone from Lemon Squad check it out, or use a similar pre-purchase inspection company. It will be worth the money.  I avoided a 'deal' on a '64 Mercedes coupe in California, and bought one later for more money but a much better purchase.  Good luck with your decision.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
