Time for another update on the building of "blue 72". Terry has been busy with proper fitting of the engine. He fabricated some custom engine mounts to move the engine back a bit more. This should give us ample clearance to the radiator:

He has also been working on plumbing the brakes and wrapping up installation of both front and rear suspension:

With racing season beginning in early March I am hopeful that Terry can get things pretty well buttoned up before he gets REAL busy.

Time for another update on this project.

0201191618.thumb.jpg.cdea0c27b4c2c319f3da7bc60e7cf577.jpg

Terry has the S14 in and tied down. I think I mentioned that he had to fab custom engine mounts to get the engine located down and back where we wanted it. he also installed the remote oil filter and a cool double pass oil cooler up front next to the radiator:

0201191617b.thumb.jpg.e1bcb902e0f9af00b743e2d2730ad197.jpg

At the back end the fuel tank is in, plumbed, and wired.

We had the FI expert come by the shop and go over the installation. He gave Terry a list of parts we will need to get the system working. Once those arrive Terry will install them and the FI guy will come back and do the fine tuning.

Terry has been working on some details for the last week. Here is where we're at with a few.

output.thumb.jpg.8357a6a93f349e426bb31fa67b6bff46.jpg

The gauges we ordered have arrived and he has them in the dash insert. I went for a retro look with satin rings and a Euro type face. We were able to combine 4 gauges in the left unit- fuel level, oil pressure, oil temp, and water temp.

0206191632.thumb.jpg.49ce3e87b0311a29b7da3614b6144761.jpg

Terry test fit the rear wheels and the spacing looks pretty good. We will be putting 195/50-15s up front, and 205/50-15s in the rear.

0208191049b.thumb.jpg.146e2f0ff40e26559ad77f1a045a294b.jpg

We will be using a coil on plug set-up for the ignition. He has all the details worked out for this set-up.

Stay tuned for more updates!

It's been a while since I posted an update. There has been a lot going on, just not much visual stuff. Wiring the fuel injection doesn't look like much in a photo.

Travis has completed the exhaust system. That certainly is worth a couple of pictures. The Toyos on the car are just place-holders. We are still looking at tire options.

Beautiful build.  I really like the gauge cluster.  Very similar to my build in a lot of ways.  If you ever want to take any of your cars out to Oregon Raceway Park let me know.  It would be fun to run with another vintage BMW on a club day out there.

A few more pictures of the progress Travis and Terry have made in the last week or so.

Engine installation is complete. All plumbing and wiring is done and Travis added a bit of bling to the rocker cover:

The battery and battery box in the trunk are done. The cover will be going out for powder coating. You can also see all the wiring and plumbing for the in-tank high pressure fuel pump:

Any more on this?  I'm starting on my new ECU thanks to @jimk, but haven't determined which ignition I want to move to...

More progress to report. But before I do that I thought you might find it interesting to see how Racecraft approaches a job like this. Here is a typical work log that I get from them about every 2-3 weeks showing what they have been working on and how long it has taken:

Bill O'Donnell has begun working on the seats in earnest. The car had Recaro seats from an E21. They were in pretty bad shape and required a complete tear down and redo. I have chosen a brown leather for the seats with black trim on the door panels. Look back in the thread for samples.

We found a nice spot to tuck the oil cooler:

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
