mataku527
Since I've had the car, I've had a whistling sound that comes from the driver side. It is only present when I'm going more than 30mph. Opening the windows don't make a difference, putting my hand over the roof rail doesn't seem to do anything, I put my hand all over the antennae and it doesn't seem to do anything. Any thoughts or common causes?
JerryC
I believe Mr. Mike Self would suggest applying blue masking tape to various potential whistle sound sources (one or two at a time) until the whistle goes away to isolate the sound source. Use the tape to temporarily block air flow over suspect sound sources, such as trim gaps, windshield gasket edges, and so forth. Once you've found the source, making the noise go away is likely to be fairly easy.
Lorin
It's probably the front hood belt line trim.
yeewiz
just my guess, but since the window position has already been ruled out, that only leaves the front vent window, or rear window, or door seal. that masking tape idea is a great one

jmiller
As above ^^^ check the front belt line trim. I had the same problem; sounded like a jet turbine, coming from the windshield, or door. Felt like it was right next to my head. Passengers were making jokes about me and my old car! Put tape all over everything until finally I determined it was due to a gap in the front belt line trim. Replaced the rusty fastener there, tightened it up, problem solved.
ray_
... or the sunroof Well I guess I better tape up all those holes on my missing beltline trim now...

yeewiz
well sounds like gonna need a lot more masking tape than originally planned Edited November 17, 2017 by yeewiz
al
I just had my car painted and all the trim removed and replaced, somewhat poorly, and now I know why it's called the whistling bomb. It was definitely making a high-pitched whistle before, but I thought it was coming from my carburetor. I noticed the upper trim along with the antenna wasn't fastened perfectly and I plan on giving The blue tape treatment to see if that's the problem

landon
There is a small rubber seal that goes on the top of the door at the front edge that may be missing? If you see the sheet metal edges there then it's not present. I believe that can cause some wind noise.

mataku527
Looks like it will take some time to figure this out. I was hoping to make my 2002 my daily driver, but with my usual drive about 5 minutes and hearing how short drives are not good for the car, I only take it out on the weekends. I'll get working on some of the tips above. Maybe we should compile a post or list of the most common sites so that it'll be easy to find for the next person. Gonna start with the beltline trim. Wish me luck!
