Simeon Posted October 22, 2017 Share Posted October 22, 2017 Yes, very sad. First Mitsubishi closed here, followed by Ford and Toyota and finally GM Holden. Nobody covered themselves in glory here. Ford and Holden insisted on making cars that they wouldn't/ couldn't sell outside of the Australian market. They were good cars but people wanted different types of cars. The government literally dared them to leave Australia and argued over relatively small amounts of subsidies. When you look at the amount of subsidy thrown at fossil fuels (especially considering the low numbers of jobs that brings), you have to wonder why ideology wouldn't stretch to subsidising car manufacturing. bento Posted October 22, 2017 Share Posted October 22, 2017 I enjoy my Australian made Chevy SS, but it’s definitely a niche vehicle. I’m glad I got a chance to own one from new. It’s too bad.
