Special options?  They left the factory as ordered by the distributor or dealer.  And the delivery date is the date the title transferred which confuses so many US owners e.g. Hoffman took title in Germany.

Do you think this is the original paint?  If so... a pro can really do wonders to bring it back to life.  BE careful how much compounding/polish you use to keep from removing too much. An orbital will reduce the number of hours, but can burn the edges/corners quickly, if not careful.

I like McGuires #7 as an initial step, but there a lot of ways to do it.  #7 is quite oily and seems to re-vitalize the old paint.  Good YouTube videos on it's use.

The car has been repainted at least once, but it looks like a good color match to the original and is polishing up very nicely.  I'll look for #7...sounds like the oil is really helpful.

Yes, but this car was delivered to a dealer in Munich a whole three months after the production date, so it's an odd gap compared to the "norm" (whatever that actually was).  Just guessing.. no idea why the delay, really. =)  Perhaps it was a demo car briefly.

Just got the sunroof and headliner out.  Still nothing but very light surface rust in limited locations.  Sunroof cables and crank are probably beyond repair, cables are rusted and the gear looks pretty stripped.

Paint is coming along! Trunk is finally clean-ish too.  It’s missing a lot of hardware to make the lid open and close though...

The sunroof area is dirty and has lots of crusted-on old gasket, but no signs of rot or rust other than the left-in rust from the cables.  I was really expecting trouble in this area, yet again pleasantly surprised.

Whatever you do, don't toss any old parts!  What type of front sunroof slider does your car have?

I’m being careful not to!

it has this:

Turned my attention to the sunroof today...thought I’d have it reinstalled by dinner time, but all the cleaning and polishing of the aluminum components is simply taking longer than expected.

The crank is actually fine, just looked crusty. It’s not concourse or anything, but it’ll work fine.  The cables..I think I may be able to rehab them, they were scrubbed today and are currently soaking in rust converter.  I’ll clean them off tomorrow, remove any water with wd40, soak them in a light seewing machine oil, then wrap them in plastic for a few days and see what happens.

Also, my friend finished polishing the hood today and it looks great!

Thanks for this graphic! My cars have this style but the 2002 BMW parts listing is for the later style which won't work. All I really need are the nylon pieces.

  • 2 weeks later...

After a hiatus for the last week-and-a-half due to work and then a family visit, I was back at the 2000 today.  The theme was "putting back together" and I got the sunroof successfully reinstalled and working perfectly with all it's original hardware.  I still need to redo and then install the headliner panel and all new seals, but I'm happy with how easily it went back together.  It functions well and is lined-up perfectly.  Video of it working here:

IMG_6507.mp4

I also got the headlights cleaned and back in, and the driver's side grille reinstalled (passenger side is at my friend's house where he was trying to polish it (I need to grab it...), and I also got the front turn signals reinstalled (unfortunately didn't photograph).

IMG_0983.thumb.JPG.15a39573e3d1c7078d94e9625f97a011.JPG

Cleanup is going well and I'm pleased that things are starting to go back together.  Planning to get the rest of the grille installed this week one evening, then I'll clean and install the front bumper.  This coming weekend I plan to clean-up the wiring under the steering column (**if anyone can provide me some reference pics of the wiring in the area under the steering column and/or links to diagrams, I'd really appreciate it**) and use my multimeter to test all the major circuits and switches in prep for getting it running after my vacation in late November.

While I am planning to drive it around "as-is" for a while with no headliner, no rear seat, no carpets, etc, I do need a few things to make it functional and am hoping some folks here can help out.  I won't need perfect pieces, just functional ones...if anyone has any of these please send me a message:

  • Driver's side door panel (black preferred, but any color is fine)
  • Driver's side door-pull/arm rest
  • Quarterlight knob assembly
  • Driver's side rear tail-light (long, 2000/tilux style with amber turn)
  • Steering center link (mine's bent)
  • BOTH Trunk Hinges (and other hardware)

I'm also thinking about what the drivetrain and braking system will need before putting it on the street:

  • Rebuild front brake calipers and install new rotors/pads/hoses
  • Rebuild rear brakes with new drums/shoes/cyls/hoses
  • Flush & fill brake and clutch fluids
  • Drain & fill transmission
  • Drain & fill differential
  • Drain & fill gas tank + replace filters
  • Change oil & filter
  • Drain & fill steering box

After putting this all back together, I think you could get away with not installing the nylon pieces...I think they serve just to make things quieter.  That said, probably best to have them, but if they can't be sourced, I'm feeling pretty certain you can still have a functional sunroof without them.  I also found that the metal bracket is reversible if one side is too tight (ie: flip it around and it's a mirror-image).

  • 1 month later...

After being on vacation in Japan for a few weeks, I'm back and finally tore into the engine yesterday.  Unfortunately it looks like it suffered a head gasket failure in cyl. 2 sometime in '95 or '96 (last reg sticker is '96) and was allowed to sit with water in cyl. 2 for ~25 years.  Some photos are below.  The coolant turned acidic or something and ate through a lot of the aluminum components (see last photo of the water outlet piece), so the head is probably just as bad inside.  I'll try to clean it and see if it's salvageable, though...it's an E12 stamped head.

Now I'm again on the search for a 2.0 m10...if anyone has any leads, please let me know! =)

OH! I didn't take any photos, but in addition to tearing apart the engine, I installed the four new door buffers I received from Nung (nt7110) and now all four doors close perfectly (instead of just two)!  I also installed the replacement rearview mirror I received from Eric (ericbmw2000) which made a nice functional improvement to the interior of the car.  Thank you both!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
