I haven't had a lot of time to focus on the red NK rotting in my back yard over the last month or two until this last weekend when I tried to reinstall the front bumpers.  The brackets that hold them to the chassis seem to be tweaked just enough that I can't get them on, so I just opted to remove the brackets and run bumperless until I can find replacements...seems they're NLA.

Also still on the hunt for a 2-liter engine.

I finally purchased a 30mm socket, which of course is necessary to try to turn the engine.  Good news is that piston #2 is freed-up from it's crud and the engine rotates freely!  I plan to pull the block (incl. transmission) from the car by the end of the month and will take it to a shop for assessment.  If it's good, I'll have it honed and rebuild it.  I'm hoping to start disassembly on the head so I can send it to a shop as well, next weekend.

The photos below are of cyl #2, first one is before (taken when I removed the head a few weeks ago) and the second is tonight after cleaning it up a bit with some paper towels:

Yesterday was a significant day for my granada 2000: we finally moved it off the lawn and into the driveway!  I also finally replaced the tail-lights -- in the process I discovered that the rear filler-plate was not wrong, just turned around, so I cleaned everything up and fixed that and it looks much better.  I tried also to mount the trunk lid on it's new hinges, but it started to become tedious and it was getting late, so I called it a day.

Here it is next to my husband's new M3, looks so cute, upright, and petite next to it, but really they're the same length:

And here's the rear-end with the "new" tail-lights and re-oriented filler-plate:

This Sunday my husband and I decided we'd try to drop the transmission...ended up spending 3 hours just on the exhaust instead and broke the manifold.  Not a huge deal, but now I'll need a replacement manifold (**hint hint to anyone out there who has one**).  This coming weekend we'll go for the driveshaft and actual transmission.

The exhaust is mostly original and in great shape other than the incorrect muffler -- seems an easy fix to have the correct one welded in (and it's available new still).  It's nice to have the car in the driveway where I can actually get under it now, too!

Oh and I forgot to add: now that I got the car up, I discovered that it has THREE green springs and ONE white spring...on the driver's side front.  Both front brakes have been replaced with units from a junk yard (typical yellow marker on them that says "2002") as well as the driver's side strut assembly (also has 2002) on it.

Two questions:

(1) Are the 2002 and 2000/NK front struts the same (ie: am I going to have problems with mismatched strut assemblies on the car)

and

(2) How hard would it be to find a replacement green spring for the driver's side front?

struts, shocks, top mounts, brakes and bearings are all different between the 02 and the NK. Manifolds are the same so should be easy to find a replacement. That whole exhaust is diy, personally I'd replace the lot.

Does that mean if the brakes are marked for a 2002 and the left-front strut assembly is, I'm going to have problems?  I can take detailed photos this weekend...

The exhaust has the factory-looking resonator section (not in the photo above) and the downpipes look very factory...  Other than the surface rust, the whole system is very solid, that weird muffler is just very unfortunate.

Don’t the series II NK sedans share parts with the 2002?

I think so, but wasn't the series II starting in late '68?  My car has a late '67 build-date.

This is the spring in question (only photo I currently have, again more this weekend...).  Not sure there's enough detail here to help anyone identify it.  The late front springs on Walloth and Nesch's site look much shorter than the early ones.

Today was the day for the transmission.  I was originally aiming to take it one step at a time, so was ONLY planning for the transmission today, but things went a bit sideways...

So now the engine is out, which is great as it was the ultimate goal.  I removed the transmission before tarp-ing it (already had it unbolted as I was trying to remove it without dropping the entire sub-frame).  Tomorrow I'll remove the block from the subframe and mount it to my stand for disassembly and cleaning.   I'll probably take the power-washer to the engine bay and sub-frame too.  I probably now have ~30 labeled zip-locks with screws, bolts, and other small parts in my garage, which is going to be fun time when it comes to cleaning and reassembly...

I also got a chance to get better photos of the brake and strut assemblies -- both are marked Boge with the BMW logo (if that matters).  Both strut and brake assemblies look the same as far as I can tell, but the spring on the passenger side has blue and white paint rather than green.  The car was also wearing weird spacers that I failed to notice when I put the Hartge's on it for towing.

...and the passenger side for comparison:

I also got the new trunk hinges installed the lid put back on, which was a little tricky.  I found some motor oil really helped me get the pins in the chassis side of the hinge. (installed trunk lid not pictured)

Anyway, a few more pics then goodnight -- today was surprisingly "simple," but still exhausting.  Excited about how things are coming along =)

Today I wanted to get the engine on the engine stand...not an easy feat from an on-the-ground position without a hoist.  Only took moments to unbolt the engine from the sub-frame, then spent another 45 mins or so going at it with some degreaser and brushes.  The next three-or-so hours were spent trying 500 different ways to get it on the stand and upright.  Hopefully next weekend I'll begin teardown on the block so I can get it cleaned and fluxed.

  • 1 month later...

Just a small update: nothing has been done to the car with work being crazy and all the rain we've had lately, but I was able to get the VIN verified yesterday afternoon so I can finish the registration on the car...I have an appt. with the DMV on April 2nd to finish the registration and pick up my black TILUX plates =D

I'm also finally settling on what I want to do with the engine.  I've known for a while that I want to do dual-sidedrafts like a TI/Lux, but now I'm definitely leaning toward a 2.0 TI/SA style engine with high compression, a hot cam and dual Weber 45s.  I have an e28 as my DD and this won't be replacing that for those duties, so it needs to be more fun.  And it's hard to resist building a quick, lightweight car.  I may even leave the interior stripped for a few years so I can enjoy it more fully on the track.

If anyone has ideas as to what type of cam would pair well with the Webers, I'd love to hear it!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
