Sharing information on Terry's Fall 02berfest that was sent out on an email from Terry.  I've had the pleasure of participating in several of Terry's 02berfests and have had a great time at each.  From the 02s, the folks, the drives, the food and the history of the Fredericksburg area it all just makes for a great weekend.

As usual, Terry Sayther Automotive will be sponsoring the 2017 Fall Texas 02berfest in October. This year we are adding a day of CULTURE to the event. We will be heading out to Fredericksburg on Thursday Oct 26, and Friday we will spend the day learning about Lyndon Johnson. We will visit various Johnson family locations. And naturally, we will be blasting down country roads between locations and eating well!  Saturday we will return to our original longer format rally drives with several hours of Hill Country roads. Hope you'll all be able to make it.

The Peach Tree Inn located in Fredericksburg will be the base of operation and Terry had block of rooms being held.  Be sure to mention you're with the BMW 2002 group.  The number for the Peach Tree Inn is 1-800-843-4666  http://www.thepeachtreeinn.com/

I've added a few random pics from previous 02berfest events.  Feel free to ask any questions you might have.

Good deal Ed!  Steven booked his room yesterday.  I believe Rudy booked his rooms last week.  He told me he's planning on bringing 3 of his 02s.

Updated info from Terry's latest email:

Dear Fellow Texas 02berFesters!

Our Fall event is quickly coming up on our calendar, and Debbie and I would like to share some details about the event--October 26-29, 2017.

This year we are trying something new--a CULTURE DAY!  Don't be scared!!-- we hope it will be a day to learn more about the history of the Texas Hill Country, and give our rally participants an opportunity to spend an extra day together.  The plan tentatively goes like this:

For those who would like to drive together, we will be meeting at Terry Sayther Automotive (1606 Fortview Road, Austin, TX 78704)on Thursday, Oct. 26 at 1pm.  We will take off 1:30 or so and drive some lovely back roads to our host hotel, PEACH TREE INN (401 South Washington, Fredericksburg, TX 78624, 1-800-843-4666).  We will have dinner somewhere along Main Street in this charming, historic town.

Friday, Oct 27 will start early with breakfast together followed by a short drive to the Lyndon Baines Johnson State/National Park for an early tour of the Texas White House.  LBJ's car collection--including his famous Amphicar--is on display in the adjacent airplane hanger facility, as well as the special smaller Air Force One that could land on his ranch.  There are also several other sites to see as we travel Ranch Road One towards the Visitor's Center--the birthplace home, The Sam Johnson homestead, the Johnson Family Cemetery, and the historic Junction School. We'll spend the morning there.

Then we will drive to nearby Johnson City for lunch. Johnson City is also the site of the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historic Park.  The park's Visitor's Center offers exhibits about LBJ and his wife, Lady Bird, and a short film about them both.  We will have the opportunity to visit his childhood home, and take a walking tour of the Johnson Settlement.  The Settlement looks at a broader scope of Texas history, and has exhibits about cowboys, cattle drives, and frontier life.  Several dog-trot cabins and stonecut barns will give us a glimpse on life in the late 1800s.  There is also Withers and Spaulding General Store, set up like an early 1920s mercantile.  Lots to see.

Johnson City also has several shopping opportunities--antique stores, Texana, even a cool Science Museum--so you can feel free to mosey about on your own in the afternoon.  Or, you can head back to our Peach Tree home and take a nap, shop, or drink!

We will have dinner in Fredericksburg, then breakfast on Saturday….we drive to eat!  Saturday morning we will hit the road for a fabulous Hill Country Drive, returning to F-burg  in the late afternoon.  Saturday night dinner we usually break into smaller groups for dinner on-your-own.

Sunday morning we will share coffee and breakfast--then say our so-longs,  head for home and start dreaming of our Spring 02BerFest!

You are welcome to join us at any point for this event--we do request that if you are planning on the LBJ Tour Day that you let us know.  We need a HEAD COUNT for lunch on Friday, so if you can come, PLEASE LET US KNOW ASAP.  Just  reply to this email with name/number at your earliest convenience.

Also, if you had not made reservations at PEACH TREE INN, please do so soon.  Mention that you are part of the BMW CLUB when calling, as they have rooms blocked for our event and may otherwise tell you no rooms are available.

Look forward to seeing eveyone--

Terry and Debbie

PS: We are planning to leave for the BMW CCA Octoberfest  event in New Orleans just a couple days after our 02berfest ends. Let us know if you're interested in this week long event---we can caravan over there!

I might be able to attend. I am heading to Baton Rouge to visit my brother late in October anyhow. I have the time off lined up... Hmmm.

EDIT:  I just looked it up; it is 542 miles from my brother's place to get to Fredericksburg. Oh my. It is already a long drive to get to BR and back to Dayton, OH... Maybe I should fly in for next year's drive/gtg?? I can easily catch part of of O'Fest from where I will be staying just east of BR, however....

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
