2000CS tear down started today

Ed, i guess that my slowness in making your carpet set isn't holding you up from blasting down the road...i just found this thread and had no idea that you were tearing the car down...keep on keeping on

No worries, Esty. We are many weeks from installing carpet. 

 

Got the 2nd floor pan tacked in today...then ran out of wire.  Be back at it in the AM. 

 

 

So glad to be making good progress, again. None of this would be happening without the kindness of good friends, especially Barney.

Finally back on the car today. Chassis dolly complete. Doors off. Rockers completely cut out and prefit the driver's side replacement rocker. 
Peter C stopped by to give the car a look-over. Gave me some good pointers and we discussed our plan of attack. ...a very productive day.

 

 

As always, Barney has been a MASSIVE help on this project. We had a plan for the chassis dolly, and he remembered he had that channel material and fab'd the entire thing on his own. It's adjustable fore and aft, the rear section is adjustable for width to accommodate the CS or a 2002. The rear utilizes some old subframe bushings.  It's nice and tall to provide lots of clearance while on the lift and when it's on the ground. Boom.

While Barney repaired some rusty inner rocker sections, I prepped, fit the outer rockers. Was a busy day capped off with getting the driver's side installed and the passenger side is all ready to go in the morning. 

 

Weather is perfect, so hopefully we can get most all the panels repaired in the next few days.

Cutting big holes in the body was a bit unnerving, but we took our time to fit the new panel perfectly. The stitch welds didn't warp the panels hardly at all.

 

 

Grind it down in the morning and continue with the patching. There's still plenty to do...

Another busy day.... put Papa to work cleaning chrome/trim.

 

 

Barney and I tackled the passenger side patches. The original panel was much cleaner/straighter than the driver's side and the new patch looks awesome. It welded up beautifully.

 

 

Greg stopped by with his cherry '75 02. He's been wanting to change the starter for some time. We wrapped that up under the lights and the car starts instantly now. Nice.

 

 

We also changed the water pump in Barney's blue 02. Was a busy day while Papa supervised.

Almost done with the patching and welding. It's been very rewarding, for sure. 

 

 

Soon it will be blasted and primed and ready for the paint shop.

Thanks!  A flapper disk on a side grinder works wonders. It's much easier to control than a hard abrasive wheel.

Passenger front floor had a few holes. I didn't want to shell out for a whole new pan but had just enough leftover from the other pan with the ribs to make two pieces into one that matched up very well.  Barney put the beads down and it looks great. I'll clean up the drain plugs and glop sealant and fit them back. 

 

We are really down to the small stuff now. One door corner and some minor holes and I think we are done making sparks. After about 4 rolls of wire, Barney has really become good at this welding business ?

this looks like a really sweet place to be able to work on your car, its like a BMW wild life preserve, enjoy
