Found some original rear parcel shelf vinyl in Germany. It's in good shape and will be nice to have the proper stuff in the car; considering this pattern is unobtainium

I basically learned to weld on this car; but I couldn't begin to learn bodyman skills and expect anything good to come of it.  Mitch is doing all the body work/prep/and paint.  All I'm doing is writing the check...   After seeing his previous work, I can rest-assured that the CS will look amazing when he's done.
This post has really stuck with me. I'm about burnt on body work. I just made the decision to do exactly what you did and just drop it off to have the last bit of body work finished and get painted. Spring is right around the corner and I want to start enjoying my 02!

  • 3 weeks later...

After sorting out some fish-eye problems in the paint booth for a couple weeks, Mitch shot the hood and color-sanded it on Monday... that'll do B)

"Fish-eyes" in finished paint are caused by oi/silicone contaminants either on the surface being painted, or in the airstream.  The surface tension of a microscopic drop of oil will create a tiny depression in the painted surface...the paint simply won't adhere in that tiny spot....except there will be many tiny spots all over the newly-painted surface.  AAAAAAGGGHHHHH..!!!!  In this case, the problem was in the compressed air stream. Mitch cleaned, cleaned, cleaned and added new oil/water separators, filters, and a final 0.5 Micron filter for the compressed air.  Hopefully, this is the end of the problem...

In owning a cabinet shop the finish process was definitely the biggest pain in the rear end to dial in. We battled with fish eye and solvent pop for a long time until we finally found the right combination of materials, sprayers and air cleaners. Just hearing the term "fish eye" still gives me flashbacks of those terrible times.

I'd love to say that this car will make it to MidAm, but I can't see that happening, Andrew. Perhaps I can get it to Pittsburgh in a few months.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
