I have spent the last week "Comet Washing" the old burnt paint.  It's still a 40-50 mile Paint job, but it's far better than it was.

Here is a side-by-side of comet scrubbed paint vs old paint.

SHINY PAINT CAUSES STRESS!

.... At least that's what I tell myself to avoid painting a car.

Awesome! Patina car stuff. I think I am going to do this to mine and then use Zep floor polish to seal it. The Zep thing is outlined in the link below. My finish is more roached than yours so I am leaning into the patina car thing for now.

Woah, never seen the ZEP method! Thank you! I went with comet and Mcguires #7, which helped a lot!  I LOVE the patina look, and It was a tough call because it really wasn't patina and it just sorta started to look....dirty.    It helped bring out the patina in the car, all while making it look nicer.  It is a lot of work and I need to redo some areas but I think it makes a drastic difference!

Looks like you have decent paint to work with. Maybe take the winter months to properly bring it back to glory. Comet cleaner..? Invest in some proper compounds and polish, tape off the trim and such and do one panel at a time. Results can be remarkable.

Here’s my crusty Inka after time with some Griots products.

It’s not difficult and it’s very rewarding

Ed, It's 100% on my list of things to do, eventually.  The paint was a very bad re-spray sometime in the 80s.  It's fine in some areas and in other areas, I can see primer through it already.  It's supposed to be Malaga, but now that I've removed the burn, I'm not sure what it is!   In some areas of the car (the back panel), I have two different reds and despite it 100% being single stage, it has metallic flake in it.  I'm worried if I make it too nice, it'll end up looking worse!   😂🤣

ALSO! I love that orange, it came out wonderful!

This Inka is also a respray.  It has some solvent pop and other defects in it.  Perhaps find a professional detailer to do the job?  Cost is way less than a paint job, and they know exactly what products to use that won't damage the paint or cut too much.

The Griots products are pretty mild; even the most aggressive compound won't remove a lot of material unless you overwork an area.

Looks like you have a good car, regardless.

You’re halfway there to making a replica of one my favorite 2002s, the “flying coffin”

I installed the thing that fixes the door strut with that handy wire attached, worked perfectly. Didn't think to take a photo because I was so happy not to hear the noise.

This is like what I bought and installed.   I will photograph it in assembly but didn't take photos of the process.  Mostly just some drilling and bingo bango.
