OldRoller is correct.  It is a friction fit; three sharp edges of the ring bite into three plastic tabs.  Find those and force the ring CCW any way you can.  Be sure to make sure the inside of the glass and black face of the gauge are clean as a Safway chittlin' after you secure the glass.  Nothing irritates me more than that inaccessable piece of feral lint behind the glass or on the face...

No way, CCW? I’ve been going CW! That would explain it.

Oops, nope, I was going CCW all along. Pre-coffee post. I may skip fully pulling the glass. I was able to get it pretty clean with everything installed.

Thanks @2002#3 and @OldRoller

After thrashing the ZF 3HP12 in my 74 for a few hundred miles, it appears it is not ready to give up the ghost. To be honest, it's growing on me... so the manual swap will take a back seat until it takes a final dive.

The shifter handle did bother me though, not sure why. Might be a memory of a long trashed ride from years ago. So I decided on a change, to a F series trigger knob in black. A little fiddly working out the detent mechanism but the end result makes me grin a little more....

I had an auto once, was surprised how much I liked it, there was a fella in the UK that put a Tii setup in one, said it made a nice drive, Jaymic wrote it up, I should find that article!

Went from no spring pads to a 3 dot spring pad with a lower pad. Ride quality is so much better, no idea why the previous owner left them off. image.thumb.jpeg.45f9c089949adb166708c112e08d4d79.jpeg

Yes, I was impressed with the performance. You can drive as sedately or lively as you like. The kickdown switch takes the revs to 4500 rpm, with shifts at 35 and 55 mph provided the cable is adjusted correctly. Or you can get jiggy and take it to redline and bump shift, as the shifter has no detents in the foward selection. Shifts are solid with no flare.

Fun when you're sitting at a stoplight next to a rice rocket....

To lower the back end 1.5 - 2 inches.  Also, there is a tendency for the rear springs to slip off the bottom pad.  The rubber tube/sleeve on the spring ends eliminates the slippage.

The tube/sleeves sure add a lot of sloppage at the attachment points.

Especially at the top.

Finally got to test out the cluster cleaned up, re-bulbed, and with a new drive gear (short stubby one, not the tall thin tenths one, though I also had to fix the tenths one with shaft peening trick) in the odometer. It works! I’ve never been so excited to see 22 miles on a trip meter. To be honest, one of my favorite fixes has been fixing the instrument and heater control bulbs. That warm glow is wonderful. Reminds me of my vintage hifi gear.

Did a little Mercer Island loop (IYKYK) for the test. The alpine glow view of Rainier from the i90 floating bridge was stunning.

What builds did you use they look great!

Thank you! The color looks more yellow than it does in that cellphone pic but I imagine you could get some LEDs to make it look more white like that if that is what you’re going for. The bulbs are just standard Philips 12256 LL bulbs from Rock Auto (second one on the list in the link below).  Half the price of Oreilly even including shipping.
