I've pulled the seals off and they do have numbers on them.  You might try a bearing and seal shop where you live.  They can cross-reference and sell you generic seals.  The big problem is likely the condition of the bore on the master and slave.  If those are original parts or at least very old the bores might be  beyond salvation.

 

Most people buy new masters and slaves.  In the big picture they are not that expensive.

 

Removing the slave can be fun.  Sometimes they are rusted into the mounting hole and a pipe wrench is required to break it free.  Removing the circlips (front and rear) is easy with a circlip tool.

That master does not look like original equipment to me.

Rebuild kits are available, but I have taken apart two very different styles and the kits will not be the same.  For $60 (delivered) a new master seems cheap to me now.  I spent a lot of time taking mine in and out and moving internal parts from one to another, only to have it continue to leak.

 

I read an article lately that talked about Dot 3 and 4 brake fluid and it said to stick with the one for which the system was designed.  It said the the 'other kind' of fluid can be bad on some of the components intended for the 'original kind'.  I stick with Dot 3, in spite of reading people praising advantages of Dot 4. 

 

Your melting rubber scenario is a weird one.  I wonder if mixing types could cause such a mess?

 

I've read a little now about mixing Dot 5 with the others and it sounds like someone may have done that with yours.  It'd be good to take a close look at the brakes too.

Got so mad, finally got the snap rings off but the slave cylinder was fused to the aluminum ring on the bell housing.  They didn’t use anti seize.  Took judicious use of an low power air hammer to convince the slave cylinder to “go away!”  Drained the whole reservoir and will change out the brake master cylinder next. So far no leaks at the corners, but they could be next.

 

Now on the replacing the starter.  Has anyone used a 320i starter in an ‘02?  I here it is a direct change out and they are stronger.  Is that true?

White ‘73

 

Removed the left trailing fender mount. Cut away some of the underlying rotten sheet metal. I also cut an 1-1/2”x6” slot at the top under where the fend tab was to get access to the top of the new A sheet to existing metal seam for welding (if any of that makes any sense...) I forgot to take pics. I managed to get the replacement A-sheet fitted and welded in. After I was done plug welding the sheet I thought “ya know... I should run a little bead at the base of the A-sheet where it connects to the inner rocker.” This thought probably came from my previously thoughts of stitch welding the rocker seams to strengthen the body (because, well, you know... racecar!) So before I knew it one little 1/2” bead turned into stitches all the way to top. Surely it can’t hurt anything.

I stopped in at the local paint supply house and had them mix up a qt of Baikal.  A few dabs here and there against some surviving original paint. Looks spot on to me! I’m not looking forward to all of the prep, but I do want to see the engine bay all shiny and correct again.

Search on here for the ebay starter.  Works great, cheap.
