I changed the oil in the transmission for the first time since I first did it 11 years ago.  The old MTL was still kind of red and this seems like a reasonable amount of filings for so much use.  (?)  I'd pushed the metal off of the top of the magnet, to better gauge the amount.

It was fun to finally get to use the plug wrench I found to remove the fill plug.  Technically, it is a VW wrench with a 21mm box on the other end.

The first 50 mile test drive proved that the odometer is working again.  That's a handy feature.  The valve adjustment and distributor servicing have improved how it is running.  I am a little concerned with how lean plug number one looks though.  It's a bit whiter than the others.

The photo was from before the valve adjustment and I'm using 5 series NGK plugs.  I wonder if 6 series would have more tan coloring.  Number three had the loosest intake valve.  I wonder if that's why it's tan.  I suppose I should probably pull them again.  (and try spraying ether around the #1 intake)

I have one white plug on my tii's motor as well, which freaked me out a bit at first.  But I can't detect any detonation and the car runs flat cold.  Then I pulled all the plugs on an e28 535 and they were ALL just as white, and it ran like a MoFo.  So I'm wondering if I should be trying to get them all that color!

We ended up using an AGM battery, not sure the exact brand, but I believe it's just a generic AGM mount, bolted to the floor

That is a Odyssey 28L battery. An excellent battery. I run the Odyssey PC680 under my back seat.

My project has stalled waiting on my booster and injection pump to come back from rebuilding. So in the mean time I'm just making projects like cleaning up the wheel wells.

Crankshaft Enema

PROBLEM:  Crankshaft Blockage

SOLUTION:

  • 1 slice of whole grain bread*
  • 1 drift (of sorts)
  • 1 BFH
  • 5 patient minutes of persuasion

RESULT:  Oh, sweet relief!

* For some reason 12-grain works better than 8-grain.  Must be the special fiber in those 4 additional grains.  Next time I'll use bread made from Super Colon Blow** grain...won't even need a hammer.

I used this very same method (though with gut blocking white bread) on my crankshaft with the narrower needle bearing and it worked beautifully.  Much easier cleanup than using bearing grease.

Getting texted by friends at Monterey is NOT cool…

but does serve as inspiration!

Engine time!   Finished the bay prep, including fitting the brake fluid reservoir and bending a new matching clutch master feed pipe.  Also zip-tied the brake residual pressure valve.

Note the engine mount locations with the 02 Underground mounts (inspired by the old 02 autohaus setup).

I finally got around to pressure washing the carpet today, after having removed it a month or so ago, due to spilling coffee under the passenger seat.  The compressed air nozzle probably removed more dirt than the pressure washer.  I hung it up and could see the dirt and water blow out with the sun shining through from behind.  It was a messy job, but satisfying at the same time.

No photos of that process, but I did take some when I dealt with the rust I found after taking the carpet out.  That was another messy job.

After a bunch of scraping, sanding, wire wheeling and grinding, I washed it with OSPHO and scrubbed that in with a scotchbrite pad before finally wiping it dry.  Paint tomorrow.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
