very observant, the black hoses are connected to ports i machined into the intakes manifold for using a manometer to dial in the DCOE carbs, i connected them together to play with vacuum advance on the 123 distributor. still trying to see if it helps or hurts the performance. haven't quite got the curve right in the distributor.

Got the idea early that With the battery relocated you can get cooler air to the intake... then I saw that there was another likeminded member here on FAQ that had actually done it. So, after removing and refastening the overcenter attachments it is finished

Bravo, Mike!

 

And Phase II of the project replaces the conical snorkel with a larger-diameter flex hose. You drill the black plastic blank-off plate in front of the battery (not present here) to accept one end of the hose. You buy an extra end extension for the airbox, which you drill to accept the other end of the hose. Voila: Ram Air!
 

And, it’s all easily reversible if the originality premium steps up!

Exactly where I am now, but do you think I can find a snorkel end from nearest the rad anywhere!

Peeked underneath to try and locate a noise...sporadic click sound on takeoff (one or two clicks max). I assume the rear hubs are in okay shape as I just had the wheel bearings changed, but I'm not sure. The noise almost sounds like it's coming from the giubo area but it's hard to tell. 

 

Then drove the car to find a 36 mm socket (so I could check the castle nut tightness) but harbor freight didn't have one. Drives like a champ though. I'll try autozone next time

Installed new voltage regulator and that fixed some low voltage issues at certain rpm's. 

 

Also installed new plugs as prevention as I'm about to start a 2.5k km road trip. Old plugs seem to point to car running rich (obvious from smell).

Time to address the cooling issue.  Radiator, thermostat and water pump all out, block drained.  Awaiting delivery of new tstat, shroud and sundries from Blunt.  Ever the optimist, using my wifi snake camera meantime to take a casual look around for gunk in the water passages.  That’s a 1980 water pump on the left.  The car sat for 17 years.  We know what the water pump was up to during that period: growing a beard!   You can’t say they didn’t make ‘em tough.
