What did you do to your 2002 today !

Recommended Posts

This past week I sorted the suspension - front and rear.  For the front, that means:

1.  Replacing the tie rods end to end

2.  Replacing Ball Joints - involved drilling out rivets in control arms and lots of new BMW hardware all around

3.  Replacing Bilstein Strut Insert with Bilsteins Sports - turns out the old ones are still good - oh well, had new ones so on they went

4.  Replacing Coils - Stock to Suspension Technique Lowering by 1"+

5.  Replacing Strut Bearings

6.  POR 15 Silver the Brake Calipers after cleaning them up

7.  New bushings on sway bar ends and had to replace one of the long M8 Bolts as it was bent at the bottom - common issue from what I am reading

For the rears:

1.  Checking Bilsteins Sports that are already in - no leaks and look good

2.  Replacing stock coils with Suspension Technique - lowered by 1+ to match the front

3.  Cleaning out the wheel wells - what a mess!

Took the car out for a ride and I love the new handling characteristics and she is super smooth and quiet.

Thanks to everyone on the FAQ for their help and support!

Picked up more light for the 2002's garage. After work today, I picked up 4 free shop lights.  Plan to mount them along the edges of the garage for extra light. Nice to know the 2002 trunk easily holds 4 double barrel fluorescence light fixtures with room to spare.  Unfortunately for now, my VW is hogging the garage waiting on a new transaxle so the 2002 will have to stay in the auxiliary garage.

Installed Harry's improved door brake on the driver's side.  Adjusted the window travel.

Out with the old:

In with the new:

Works just dandy!

During my last stop returning from Vintage Saratoga (NY) event, I tried rolling the driver's side window up in the 69 and it wouldn't budge.  I rotated the crank down then back up with some force.  Nothing.  I then grabbed the window edge with one hand and cranked up the handle.  POP, SPROING, CLANK.    The window went up.

Removing the door panel yesterday revealed the spring came off the regulator.  And this was a replacement regulator I had installed not 1 year ago.  I dug out a good regulator I removed from the tii and will install it (maybe tomorrow if I can bear this heat).

Replaced Bilstein sport strut inserts with Koni yellows due to a blown Bilstein.

Konis were all I could find, and that's fine by me. I'm a fan. Had 'em on a couple of autoX cars, including DA "race" Konis.

Anyway, it took me about two hours, and the transformation to the car is incredible!

Thanks to mlytle for his "how-to" notes found on FAQ thread about strut-housing replacement.

The blown Billie will be rebuilt. Here it is. It came out of the strut housing in pieces.

Checked valve pocket clearance in a set of custom pistons (plenty of clearance). -KB

Very cool!  Blasko Racing pistons.  Beautiful.

Please excuse my lack of knowledge.  Does the test give you (what looks like)1mm clearance that I've circled in your pic?  I didn't realize the valves could come that close to the piston without concern of touching at high rpms.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
