New modern heat and air system for BMW 2002

IMO the new a/c system works nice but during the summer when it's a good 95 it can be a challenge for the system to cool the cabin, not too mention it takes quite a bit of life out of the car.

 

My car never had a/c so that being said, you also have to upgrade the radiator, because you start seeing the gauge moving upwards, so if I was to do it again I would certainly think about very seriously, kit, labor and new radiator is a good $4000.00

So if you never had A/C were are you getting this information? $4000? The kit is $1500 at most, the radiator is $300 depending on what you get and labor should be done by yourself. At most, another $1000 for labor if you can't do it. Still way under 4k. 

I'm not seeing how your coming up with your #'s.

I think the I.C.E. A/C is now $1,800-$2,000 and some shops are charging 12-15 hours for installation. That could also get one close to $4,000 for an all-new system.

 

In 2012, when I was about to re-do the 36-year-old Clardy A/C system in my ‘76, I contacted I.C.E., and I paid $900 for a new compressor, condenser, and auxiliary fan. I expected some amazing state-of-the-art components for that money. When I received a Sanden compressor, in a non-original box, a non-parallel-flow condenser, and a cheapo auxiliary fan, I returned the lot. If you don’t buy the components individually, you, somehow, pay a premium!

I purchased the the a/c system ffrom ICE for $1900.00 a radiator that’s plug and play from Ron’s Racing Radiator’s another $850.00 and unless you know about a/c systems the labor on the a/c will set you back a good $1100.00 not too mention antifreeze and a new thermostat, and some new hoses, you’re already there.

A small update on the topic. I have my Dtech system installed and working. I love this thing. It wasn't and easy installation but now that it's in, It works great. The big plus for me on this setup is blocking off the old heater box hole. It changed the car completely. I previously bought all new seals for the hood etc and never could get everything to seal up properly. This kit removes any engine/carb smell from the cabin. It also removes the vacuum effect from smells from the trunk. 

I had a few technical problems along the way. Jon was always available to help and even sent me a replacement part within a couple of days. If you're a shade tree mechanic this system might be a little over your head. I started and realized I was out of my realm of expertise. It can be done but I wasn't up to the task.

Your going to need a higher power alternator. The stock 35amp just doesn't cut the mustard if you want AC and stereo etc. I also replaced the water pump just because I didn't know the history of mine and I am going to go with a higher efficiency radiator. Overall, the system gets my thumbs up on many levels. I have the Clardy system in my 73 and this new system seems to cool the car much better IMO.

You will need a bigger radiator! I live in Houston, Tx and I had to upgrade the radiator.... please post pics of the inside console!

I was planning on doing the high efficiency radiator from Wallothnesh. I've been driving the car a little bit with the AC on and the my temp needle hasn't even budged with the stock radiator. To be fair, it's only gotten into the high 70's around here so far, so it's not a great indication of anything. I'm going to swap it anyway. Thanks for the info. It's been on the back of my mind for some time now about wether I should do that.

I ended up replacing the radiator, water pump, fan and thermostat. Our summers are brutal 98 - 101 and 100% humidity, my a/c cools it doesn’t get cold. And the temperature gauge barely moves past half way.

 I did the water pump and stat when I rebuilt the motor earlier this year. Should have done the fan and radiator at the same time but it felt like I had a giant wound that was bleeding $ everywhere at the time. I've been to Texas many times. I can attest to the humidity. It's brutal during the dog days of summer.

I hear on the bleeding cash, but if you blow the engine, forget it. I started in October to purchase the less expensive items and in February broke down and got the radiator from Ron’s Racing (plug & play) !

 Damn! That's $800 well spent. Might be worth saving a little more $ to got that route. The Wallothesch radiator is like $350 but I'm really liking the aluminum. Would look really nice in mine.

The plug & play was the selling factor for me not too mention Munich Motorwerke has replaced at least 40 radiators using Ron’s radiators. The ONLY issue if you replace the fan for the bigger one you will need to shave about a half inch on the ends of the blades. You can use a wd40 can as a guide to shave off the ends.
