Engine Rebuilder Suggestions

It's time - burning too much oil.  Oil samples show too much wear.  I used 2 quarts in the 1250 mile Vintage run, admittedly lots of long distance 4000 rpm revs on highway and much up and down hills, but I want a nice, clean engine to go with the otherwise very good '74.  I think this is more than valve seals.  So, any recommendations on a experienced M10 shop mid-Atlantic area, within couple hundred miles of DC-Baltimore would be good.  Mostly stock rebuild.

Thanks

John

Check out Don Miller at Blue Ridge Sports Cars in downtown Baltimore (where Paul Wegweiser worked at one time).

My engine block was bored by a shop in Winchester (details in my project blog).  Cylinder head was reworked by Korman in Greensboro, NC.

John-

Below is the response I got when I posed this question last year to James Laws/Paul Seto/John McWilliams of BMWCCA NCC.

I will probably use Rockville Ring & Bearing after talking with them and Clay Aulebach at RAC engines. I have no experience with either shop otherwise.

All of John's suggestions are good. I didn't know that J&F had been sold. That seems to happening a lot lately.
I would add RAC Engines in Laurel (301-776-4272) to the list. The owner's name is Clay, I can't put my hands on his card for his last name. Clay (Aulebach) is a professional racer and a 2002 owner.

I'm sure Stephane Grabina, the owner of ExcluService in Rockville (Lothar Schuettler was the founder) has or knows someone.  They have a mechanic that still knows the old stuff.  www.bmwexcluservice.com

Autoy/Autowerke, also in Rockville, has been around 2002s forever.  www.autoy-autowerke.com

J&F Motors in Shirlington/Four Mile Run has been sold, but they had a great machinist.  Wayne, one of the mechanics there, knows his stuff.   http://www.jandfmotors.net/

Blue Ridge Sports Cars in Baltimore knows 2002s, but is not a machine shop.  I'm sure they know one. blueridgesportscars.com

Some local 2002ers have had good luck with Rockville Ring & Bearing, in an industrial area off of Gude drive. Two blocks bored, rods reconditioned, and recent multi-angle valve job on an E12 head. Doug is the owner, very helpful and does work for various local 2002 racers.  http://www.rockvilleringandbearing.com/

You could pack it up and send it off to Memphis Motor Werks to have Leo Goff & the crew put the "hands of God" touch on it!  http://www.memphismotorwerks.com/shop

Let us know what you find,

John

Gents - anyone fancy a refresh of this list?  I discovered a chipped #2 piston last night on my ‘72 Tii motor. The exiting material of course made very close friends with the E12 head. I am located in Fairfax, VA. Seen a few older posts on here about local shops but fearing the covid blight could’ve killed them or changed their quality of work. Any advice appreciated.

I would love to hear about any local shops that are really good.  I have valve guide/seal issues and just couldn't find anyone local that I had confidence in.  I just recently shipped my Wii off to The Work Shop in Libertyville, IL to do some work.  Wish we had a specialist closer that really knows the 2002s.

Precision engine machine in hyatsville is a great shop. Tysons automotive machine in Sterling is also good. Both are very familiar with M10s. I went with Larry at C&M in Mount Vernon, he is in his 70s and closed up his large machine shop a few years back and now just does work out of a shop at his house. He’s no BMW ‘specialist’ but understands the euro stuff, has done plenty of these engines in his career, and is just a fun guy to deal with. He specializes in repairing heads, actually does warranty work for local Honda dealers who get cracked heads in on the new 1.5 turbos.

if your standard for confidence is The Werk Shop though, you’re gonna have to use someone like them or Korman. They are both highly specific.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
