VIN on engine block

Hi, first time poster. I have owned a 73 2002 which had the VIN on the engine block.  I looked at a 71 2002 (mid 1970 build).  Looks like an early 2002 with no rubstrips etc.  The engine block did not have the VIN but a bunch of other numbers and a "made in germany" stamp.  Does this mean this is not original block?  It's not that it is another VIN #, it's a bunch of numbers (small so hard to count) and "made inGermany". I like the car, just dont want to pay too much if this represents a "non-numbers matching" car.   Thanks in advance for advice,

I don't think that this is a 'thing' yet for a base model 02. At the end of the day the overall condition of the car is more of an issue than originality stuff like that. Definitely something to use in your price negotiation but nothing that would cause me to walk away from an otherwise excellent car.

I recommend that you read this string about Kris offering to reunite a Tii engine with its chassis owner..

Steve "Conserve"  discusses details about VINs.  I think from the markings on your block that it was factory re-conditioned block.

Building on Simeon's and Tom's comments, there are multiple threads regarding the identification marks stamped into factory exchange (a.k.a., remanufactured) engines, e.g.:




Use search strings such as "VIN exchange block" to find these threads.
