List of all 5 SPD transmissions that will work for the M10

No. Those M20 have a different bellhousing (same as M42, M50etc) pattern than the M10-30. Not a big deal for me because there are ways around it but remember all these 5speeds from the e30 on don't have a speedo drive.

Hmmmm. Wonder if the guts are swapable from case to case?  I've never built a transmission before.

The e30 240/5 speed is smaller than a 245 but still needs some massaging to fit in.

It does seem to be the most economical 5 speed option currently, I picked up a spare for $100.00 last year.

Challenges:

linkage needs to be sourced, Ireland Engineering made a linkage bar for mine.

Speedo - Speedhut built a custom faced unit for me to match the 2002 look +$20.00

Rear mount brace - I modified a 245 unit, soon to have a correct piece made $200.00

There is a guy in florida (Ernie Bello Motorsport) that sells an adapter plate that will allow you to use BMW Getrag 262 or 265 from the 80's

6 cylinders. Requires lot of tunnel work! I once considered it...... but not for long!

@BobBreed What is the purpose of the adapter plate for the 262/265 transmissions? I've mated a 262 and a 265 to an M10 on a stand, and didn't see a need for anything other than substantial tunnel mods. Is there something that I missed?

I was under the impression (perhaps erroneous) that a 262/265 would be more capable of handling higher torque than a 242/245. I was also under the impression that having a detachable bell housing would make for simpler, quicker transmission changes, which would be useful for endurance racing. Unfortunately, the extra weight of the 262/265 and significant tunnel mods convinced me that converting wasn't worth the effort.

Jeff, there will be NO number that guarantees joy.

You need to look at pics of 245s and 240s and

be ready to measure bellhousing bolt hole spacings.

how it is,

Don't know? I never tried it........It is easy to get ahold of Ernie. Google "Ernie Bello Motorsports"

OK

So I picked up a 240 Trans. with the drive shaft and shifter matter of fact I got 2 of them for mine and my son's 02 . Does anyone know what length the drive shaft needs to be cut down to and is it cut down before or after the carrier bearing.

Does anyone make a bracket for the 240  ?

and last question is there anyone on the east coast that can cut down the drive shaft ?

There's a bracket that someone makes (forgot who but its one of the usual suspects for such things).

For the driveshaft you'll want to measure.  And then measure again.  That's the best way (accounting for the length of the guibo of course.)

I'm pretty sure there are people on the east coast with a sawzall that'd be happy to cut down your drive shaft for a six pack.  Finding someone to weld on the correct fitting and to balance the whole thing might be a tiny bit trickier, but internet.

Good luck!

There is no adapter needed, M10 and M30 share the same bolt pattern. A M30 clutch won't fit inside a m10 bell housing but any other combo will bolt together just fine.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
