Reverse light

Hi all,

The 2002 1974 manual I bought last year of September has problem of non working reverse light.

The transmission is 5 speed which installed when I bought the car, probably from E21.

I checked the switch and wiring and even change the switch but still didn't work.

Coincidentally, when I shift the gear to 4 position, the reverse lights went on!

Can someone share what's wrong with the transmission, was it internal mechanical problem?

Thanks in advance

I'm not quite sure how it could be an internal mechanism issue if you indeed have an O/D getrag 245 5-speed.  The back-up light switch's plunger rests on the same shaft that activates 5th gear.  As you select R, the rod moves so that the plunger rides up the slope cut into the shaft and triggers the switch.

You can see the flat spot on the shaft where the plunger rests in this shot (upper right).

Hi,

Does the gearbox work correctly in that the five forward speeds act as expected and reverse does put the car in reverse?  Can you identify which gearbox is in there?  Photos taken from under the car may allow identification.

Yes it does work correctly though. I'll take the photos today.
