In the firewall, on the input side (passenger side). Right where the input hose attaches. There is a metal flagged plate there. Does that make sense?

 

I suspect that is the valve and it is a seal issue.

Yes it seems like a valve seal issue, possibly the smaller one that seals the valve shaft.

 

It's hard to remove the valve but you need to be careful not to break the plastic valve bracket. Blunt sells the valve repair kit.

 

I had the same issue with my 73 but decided to downgrade my valve to 72 which is fault proof (brass internal rather than plastic). It only cost me $0.50 for a new seal.
