Muffler Heat Shield

My son's 75 has a heat shield that hangs between the muffler and the gas tank.  It swings freely and hits the muffler at times, what keeps it from moving about?

That's it and yes the tank sits on it from above but mine is loose, kinda strange considering the tank is heavy and isnt loose by any means.

Take out the tank flange bolts that hold the tank to the chasis.  Use a floor jack to lift the tank a bit and put the shield back to it's place.  If it is in the right spot the rubber nubs on the shield will rest on the tank side.  Let the tank down and replace the flange bolts.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

Thanks Jim, that makes perfect sense now.

When you lift the tank with a floor jack, be sure and use a board or piece of plywood to spread the load and keep from denting the tank.  The metal isn't very thick and you'll be jacking close to where the sender unit nearly reaches the tank's bottom...
