Gasket sealer under transmission output seal flange?

Recommended Posts

I'm replacing the transmission output seal. I've gotten off the 45 year old asbestos gasket and gotten both both surfaces nice and clean. Should I use gasket sealer on the new gasket? I'm thinking not, right? It's not really under pressure.

Related question... I just read another post about difficulties getting the rear flange nut and flange off. Can you summarize your experience. I am just about to tackle that job.

Recent post showed a bracket/brace to keep the tranny stable and some suggestions for socket size to get the flange nut off.

Did you you use a puller to get the flange itself off.

Rear flange nut... pry out the lock ring by destroying it with a screwdriver and a hammer, use a proper thin-walled socket that'll fit on the nut, and zip it off with an impact wrench. Flange usually just slides right off. It's not a tapered flange or anything.

If both surfaces are smooth you can skip the sealer imho, I do sometimes use gasket shellack to stick the gasket to the removable piece on complex assembly where the gasket might shift when putting the parts together. gasket sealer has its uses in moderation but more is not the answer.

Randy, sorry that I missed your question. The nut is 30mm. You need a deep thin-walled socket like the one pictured. Standard impact sockets may have too thick a wall to squeeze between the nut and the inside of the flange. There are a variety of sources for these. The branded ones like Sir Tools and SD are expensive. There are choices for less than twenty bucks on eBay. Folks report that the GearWrench 80826 sold at Advanced Auto Parts works, and is cheap, but I've never used it.

I used some Permatex #3 (liquid gasket, non-hardening) that I had around to coat the paper gasket, just so I wouldn't worry about it.

  • 4 weeks later...

Lock Ring tips... Anyone? I just removed my driveshaft to do this job and the OEM lock ring was loose and not doing much. I redid my Diff pinion seal and could not get the lock ring to stay put before I turned it into a potato chip shape.

The act of staking it into the locating dimple seemed to make it loose or cocked it.  Any tips?

A post mentioned getting it into a subtle groove but I could not feel a groove in my flange.
