iPhone powered 2002.

I have a reman'd Bosch alternator that has been making noises for a while now. and eventually the dash light came on. Being that I just bounce around my little town in the car lately, I just have been putting off fixing the thing. Last week the dash light went back off, so I thought, "hm. It must have corrected for a little bit. The battery will like this..". So I drove it the 17 miles to cars and coffee on Saturday.  No problems.

On the way way home I plugged my phone in to top it off for the day, and hit the road.  At a stop light, I checked status and what do I see?  The charge had actually dropped!?  And by the time I got home, it had dropped by 50%!?

So basically, my phone had more charge than the battery, and I was powering the car with my iPhone!!

-that was a first.

2002 newbie, and dead serious about it.

Most phone circuits have diodes which dont allow the reverse flow of current. Most likely something else was burning up your battery, like a program running or bad cellphone reception which destroys battery life as the phone constantly hunts for a tower.

I would pull the alternator and have it checked at a local parts shop.  They do it for free.  If you have the version with the external regulator that could also be the culprit.  You can do a quick check by charging up the depleted battery, running the car and checking the voltage at around 1200 rpms.  It should be around 14 volts.  If not, the alternator or regulator is at fault.

As always, the battery cables and connections should be checked first to make sure they are solid.

Your Phone back-feeding onto the cars 12v system is pretty much impossible.  Most 12v to USB adapters have built in diodes to prevent this. Also it is hard to back feed through the 12v to 5 volt dc regulator.  However There is a possibility that if the your Aux 12 volt had died the phone could be powering the  Usb adapters internal passive components such as the internal regulator's voltage set point resistors and possibly the status LED.

I am thinking from what you said you may have an intermittent "switched" power wire coming from the ignition.....I had this issue it turned out to be a loose female spade connector on the ignition switch.

Euro,

I believe you.  I was at Fuel / Coffee and Cars with you that Saturday.  I saw a coffee stain in the pavement just outside of your shop.  The stain looked like the face of Jesus..THEN...your iPhone powered your car home!  The two experiences HAVE to be connected.  A miracle!  Yes, a miracle, indeed!

Even stranger things happened to me on the way home in my '02 that Saturday.  See photo.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
