5 speed in a NK

Hi Norm, 

 

I assume that you have a long neck diff. It's a pain I think. I just did it on my nk. 

 

I had to fabricate a disc to convert a 4 piece drive shaft to the 3 piec diff. I am using a drive shaft from a e21.

The NK transmission tunnel got larger later in life, no idea how this relates to the coupes. But the early NK tunnel is VERY tight for a 5 speed and you can only fit the getrag 245 as the 240 has more bulk higher up and simply won't go in. 

 

What year is your car and does it has the short neck as Mich says or a side loader diff? If it's a side loader with a 4 bolt flange it will be much easier. I actually found an e21 prop that fitted with a small amount of cutting to make the sliding joint slide a little closer, so no balancing required and a DIY job (make sure you mark how they slide together so you can put it back on the same splines). Then it's simply a matter of a making up a bracket for the gearbox and relocating the centre support bearing (probably - my car didn't have one to begin with). Oh, and shorten the gear selector.

Just re-read your post - sounds like you have long neck 3 bolt diff if you have a gumbo at that end, but check everything. Lots of variables.
