Rear view mirror on dashboard?

Recommended Posts

I know it wouldn't be standard, but I really like the idea of having a rear view mirror on the dashboard.

The stock mirror gets in my line of sight all the time, esp during right turns.

Has anyone tried this, or know of a nice looking chrome (preferably) mirror that might work nicely?

I feel the same way about the stock mirror obstructing too much of the view.

I do not have input about a dash mounted mirror, but I did modify the foot of an e21 mirror, to accept the attachment for a double-pivot style mirror.  That way, I can have it up high and it is not so obtrusive.  (the same could be done with the 2002 mirror base, but I wanted to keep that one in the parts bin).

Here are some photos of what I did.

The mirror I used is a couple inches wider than the stock one, so I used the e21 visors.  Even though it is a bigger mirror, it no longer feels like it is in the way.

Having it up tight to the ceiling does not give as nice of a rear view as the original position, but it can easily be lowered to suit your needs; in heavy traffic situations, for example.  This may be a little 'hokey' from a purist's standpoint, but it pulls right off, to go back to stock.

That's nice. I'll need to take my mirror off and compare with your pics to get a better understanding about what I'd need to do, but it looks good.

I'd probably still rather go for the dashboard I think.

This was a pretty simple thing to do.  Here is a photo of how I cut the base off.  No need to cut it twice though.

I drilled and countersunk the little mount piece and drilled and tapped the cut mount to take the little screws.  It is a little crooked, but that doesn't matter, once it is installed.

Junkyards are full of double pivot mirrors and the glue on windshield mounts are also easy to come by.

Either can be bought new online for cheap as well.  The junkyard allows you to make sure to get one you like though.  Online photos can make it hard to judge quality.  Mine was just one I had kicking around.  Nothing fancy.

Once you pull your mirror off, you can position it on the dash and see if the angle works.  I am afraid visibility will be compromised, having it that low.

You will then have a hole where the mirror used to be.  That could be filled by making a plug, similar to the piece I cut off, to put in the hole.  It might be a little tricky getting the plug back out though, without the leverage of the arm.  The headliner is delicate, so prying it off seems a little scarey.  Let us know what you decide to do.  : )

Mounted on the dashboard I think the front seat headrests are gonna obscure your rear vision.

However, you can try a mockup;  find a suitable dash-mounted mirror (British sports cars, MOPARs from the 60s and 70s), then remove the fasten seat belts sign.  Make an adapter plate to screw into the existing holes in your dash that held the sign, and mount the mirror to the adapter.  I suspect you're gonna have to mount it on a stalk that will be high enough to be just as obtrusive as the top mounted mirror,though...

That license plate is aptly named... you would need some big testes to trust that puny roll bar.

I like that is has a modified windshield wiper for that sliver of a windshield, too.

Interesting.
