Odd Part Instrument Cluster

Recommended Posts

I took out my instrument cluster a while back after a few beers to fix my odometer (odometer still broken). Only after I put it back together did i realize the 0 mark pin had fallen out. Does anyone have any idea where i can find a replacement. My immediate thought was to spray paint a paper clip but their size isn't close enough. Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

That is a tiny part. i have a couple of spare odometer parts, but not that piece.

None of this vintage VDO stuff is available new anymore.

i would post a wanted ad in the parts wanted section.

I got a speedometer part I needed that way.

You will probably need to just buy a complete face.

The pin usually doesn't fall out.

Good luck

Maybe look at piano wire at your local better hardware store-  it comes in lots of diameters.

The trick would be to grind a slot for the e- clip that keeps it in place- you can do amazing things

with a Dremel...

If you can accurately measure a pin, to know what size you need, you may be able to find a drill bit that is close enough.

Numbered drills step up in very small increments.

I am not familiar with the way the pins are kept in place, but I used a cut off wheel in the dremel, to take the shank off of an eighth inch drill bit.  This is their heavy duty wheel, which is about twice as thick as the regular one.  I am a huge fan of these.  Spinning the pin (bit) in a drill press, with the dremel tool resting on the table, will enable you to cut it off and cut a slot, if needed.

So, I don't really know much about your specific situation, BUT, what I just finished doing sounds a little like what Toby was describing, (only bigger), so I thought I would share a photo.

See if you can find a brass straight pin that is a tight press fit in the hole.  Cut it to the appropriate length, file the cut end nice and flat, then push it through the hole from the back side.  Secure with a little blob of JB Weld or Gorilla Glue.  The pin head will keep the pin in place, and the glue will keep it from falling out.

Depends on the kind of bottle where your beer was in. If it's one with a shackle plug, use the shackle to create a pin.

Easier is to use one of these contact pins for electroniquipment:

There's one of them to the left behind the green wire.
