De-Smog Help in Denver

Hi 2002FAQers,

I'm relatively new to the 2002 scene and bought my first one last year.  It's a 1975 out of CA, complete with lots of emissions stuff I'd prefer not to have.  Is there anyone in the Denver area (I'm in Thornton specifically) that would be interested in helping me de-smog the car?  I've read through some of the threads on this but nothing is super comprehensive and I worry I'll end up taking a perfectly good running car and turning it into a lawn ornament.  I'd really like to learn to work on the car more myself and helping with the process would be great.  If you're interested in helping out, please let me know!

Hope to see some of you guys around!

Welcome,

I didn't want to leave you hanging and not get any responses from anybody. There are a number of guys around that can provide you guidance with your question, but you first need to learn what the Colorado smog requirements are before you start pulling emission parts off the car. Colorado Air Care/DMV keep changing the rules as applied to older cars and collector plates and to compound the problem the techs doing the inspections are somewhat lacking and don't always understand what they are looking at or for. If your car is already registered/plated and you will not need to have emissions run again, then I say go for it. Mark Hutto is probably one of the most knowledgeable guys in the Denver area when it comes to older model BMWs, Cal at Auto Sport Werks in Broomfield is another resource. They might be willing to provide some verbal guidance or do the work for you. Remember, this is just a simple internal combustion engine, almost anything you do to the car that does not give the anticipated results, can be reversed or repaired. If you want to follow up with me do not hesitate.

Dave,

Colorado

Plus one for Mark Hutto. He has worked on my '73 with great results. I'm considering a full redo with him. RR2
