I'm pulling a KF pump off a spare engine and need help getting the gear wheel off. I thought it would just slide off once the nut was removed, but no dice.

On a related note, how difficult (or impossible) would it be to pull out the pump while the engine is in the car?

Cheers

Gear puller.

Easy while in the car, you'll just have to reset all the linkages when you reinstall.

I had the same problem when trying to remove the gear.  You will need the special gear puller which hooks through the holes in the gear.  If you search kugelfisher tools you will see a picture of the puller in the pictures.  You may need to have one made if you can't locate something similar.

Good luck,

Glen

I bought a generic 3prong-2prong puller from an auto parts store for 29.95.  It's been very valuable.

Actually I bought 2.  A large one, great for pulling the crank pulley, etc.  And I bought a smaller one for the KFish pulley.

..........some auto parts stores "rent" tools for free.  Borrow the gear puller if possible.

Set it up, put some tension on it, and if it doesn't slide right off, heat the surrounding area qith a propane torch.  Easy does it.  When I removed my latest one,  it released with a loud BANG.  Just like a big firecracker went off.

yup.

Before you pull the gear off, make sure you align the marks on the pump and on the crank pulley. the crank pulley turns 2x to the KF pulley.

Make sure it is TDC, you should pop the valve cover to be sure. Align your other motor the same.

in regards to pulling off the KF, it is possible but tight. The bolts holding the KF are accessible. some of the return oil and coolant hoses are hard to reach.

Good time and opportunity to replace the hoses, esp the heater hoses.

Awesome, thanks for the tip. Don't have a propane torch - any chance a hair dryer with provide enough heat? Or maybe a heat gun? I may need to buy a heat gun for a different use, so it would be great if it could do double duty.

Great, I'll be sure to do that on my active engine. The spare is in pieces already - just need to pull the pump off - and I may be trading the pump for a discount on the rebuild.

Cool, I was wondering if a generic would work, so I'll try buying one if I can't rent.

I've never needed to use a torch.  Made me nervous putting flame near fuel, aluminum, & seal/bearing.

There used to be a true tii puller around that a FAQ member loaned out to other tii owners, but can't remember who it was.

Good luck!

Yes, the KF belt can be replaced w/o removing the gear. Replace your fan belt while you're at it.

Yes, I change mine ever 5ish years. YMMV and I'm not sure of the "official" interval. The only time my tii stranded me was when my belt broke. When I replace my hoses every 5ish years, all belts are replaced. To me, it is cheap-ish insurance.

Yes, I keep a maintenance log as I seem to have trouble remembering dates.

No, you do not remove the KFish sprocket.  The need to replace the belt is not uncommon.

To replace the belt you need to remove the crankshaft pulley and lower belt cover.  Removing the crank pulley may need a puller, but sometimes with a little wedging with a screwdriver it will pop off.  You must be careful as you can damage the plastic lower belt cover.

1.  Loosen alternator

2.  Remove fan belt

3.  Disconnect and remove battery.

4.  Remove upper plastic cover.

5.  Remove radiator.

6.  Remove crank pulley.

7.  Remove lower belt cover.

8.  Replace belt.

Reverse steps.

I, too, went the rented tools route. Took a little design modification to fit in the limited space in front of the pump...and experienced the same satisfying BANG!
