I Just Bought a 2002 and I need help where to start...

Recommended Posts

Hello!!!

I am new to forum and the reason is because I just bought my first BMW 2002, she is a fjord blue 1975.  To be honest, I don't know where to start looking over the 2002. I have worked on a lot of cars but this one definitely intimidates me because of the price of errors when working with 2002s.

Throw out anything, whether it be advice or a tech tip. Right now, a few things that I just don't know are as follows:

1. How the heck do you unlock the trunk and the doors? I have attached a picture of the keys I got (online order) but I have no idea

2. What type of gasoline should I be putting in it here in America? The good stuff?

3. Does anyone have a good shop manual that I can buy somewhere online?

Thanks for the help in advance, like I said, throw out really anything. Thanks!

Pretty car!

This forum should have all the answers related to 2002s...using the Google Search function yields the best results

You could start here:

But to your specific questions:

1. How the heck do you unlock the trunk and the doors? I have attached a picture of the keys I got (online order) but I have no idea

Are you sure you have the correct keys? The trunk key is one with the pentagonal head on it.  The trunk lock can be tricky, sometimes.. some need to have the button pushed in while turning the key, others don't.

Short stubby key with green plastic appears to be one for a locking gas cap.

The other two key are ignition and door...they are not interchangeable.  If the door locks are gummed up and sticky, they can be difficult to open.  My easy solution has been to roll the window down, look inside the door at the back of the door and find the lock mechanism... spray it liberally with carb cleaner while operating the key.  Once it's working freely, spray it with a light penetrating oil.

2. What type of gasoline should I be putting in it here in America? The good stuff?

Regular gas is perfectly fine in a stock engine.  I like adding a few ounces of Marvel's Mystery Oil to help with upper cylinder lubrication and fuel system health

3. Does anyone have a good shop manual that I can buy somewhere

The standard red, Haynes Manual available all over the web for about $20, plus check the resources here on FAQ

Welcome to the forum,

The key on the right should open the trunk, the one with the plastic ring doesn't look like anything I've seen for a 2002, the 2 other ones with lobes are ignition, and doors, mine has 3 different ones, but that is not the way it came from the factory. Be careful with them, they get brittle and break like the one on top left!

Yeah, those steel keys are well-worn, which makes me think they are original to the car.

If the door handles or door lock tumblers were changed, the ignition keys ain't gonna work on the doors.

It's pretty easy to pull the door handles off and the tumblers out. You might have a look.

Also the doors need to be completely closed for the lock mechanism to function. Be sure they are double-latched.

The trunk key is teeth up when the trunk tumbler is locked.

I've never seen the requirement to have the trunk button pushed when locking/unlocking, but I'm new to these cars ;-)

Also, don't force anything. You'll break either a tumbler or key.

Welcome! And add your location to your profile please.

Cheers,

Ray

Stop reading this! Don't you have anything better to do?? :P
Two running things. Two broken things.

Keys:

My experience: my car only had one key that worked for the ignition when I bought it.  The key would not turn the door locks or open the doors.  Instead of forcing the key and potentially ruining the ignition key, I took the door handles off.  Its real easy, two screws on the inside of the door (no messing with pulleys or latches or anything).  I took the door handles to a locksmith, got new keys for each door, then lubed the door locks (luckily mine were not internally broken), then put the door handles back on and started using the keys.  The door locks were a bit sticky at first but now work great.

These cars are pretty simple and relatively easy to take apart and fix.  I'm guessing your car runs.  Thats good. Check for hidden rust around the pedal box and front floor boards, as well as rocker panels and rear wheel wells (look in trunk).

If I was you, I'd get it running good, get electrical gremlins figured out, tackle the rust, brakes, suspension, then all the other fun little stuff.

Haynes has a manual for the 2002 but I stopped using it when I discovered this website.  This website is a godsend for working on these cars.  If you have an issue with your car, chances are 10 people have already figured out how to fix it and wrote about it on here.  It's a little tricky to figure out how to navigate the website at first.

Good luck!

The green plastic key looks like a later gas cap key.

The doors can be keyed to the ignition- the secret is to find a local locksmith who does VW's- the wafer sare pretty much the same.

But +1 on taking the handles apart first- tri-flow is your friend...

Where are you?  That helps figure out what resources to recommend.  Here in Seattle, Accurate Safe and Lock can do the handles, and she charged

me less than $100 for the last set.

As to the trunk lock, work with the long, diamond- headed key to see if you can get it to turn.  If it will, then you're feeling for the release

'tab'- the bummer is, the cylinder can come apart internally, the tab can break off, get twisted, etc, and then you're stuck looking at the

'I can't get my trunk open' threads.  Of which there are quite a few.

Nice car, and welcome.

If you already know how the trunk works, please don't be irritated. I discovered this when my kids' friends tried to open the trunk - they couldn't figure out how it worked on their own because all new cars have had key-release trunk latches for the last 30 - 40 years. The '02 trunk latch doesn't work like modern cars.

The trunk key only unlocks the trunk lock, it doesn't open the trunk. To open the trunk, turn the key clockwise a full half-turn in the lock first, then push the button to unlatch the trunk. For a guy like me approaching thinking about retirement, this is common knowledge. For people who grew up with only 1980 and newer cars, it's not so common.

Also, a trick for loosening '02 door lock mechanisms is to remove the upper-most screw from the latch in the door, then spray your favorite penetrating type oil in that hole. It will get into the lock mechanism from the inside and free it up, for a while. The only way to really free it up for a long time is to take it all apart, clean everything, and apply fresh lube. Repeat every few years.

By the way, nice looking car! Welcome to the club.
