Holy crap... they can now 3D print directly in metal

If you want to really see something, look up Blue Origin. They're using 3D printing to make rocket engines. Let me say that again, ROCKET ENGINES. It's amazing how far that technology has come so quickly.

3d printed parts can be incredibly light and strong since they don't have to be welded together but can still have highly complex shapes.  Places where subparts interact is almost always a weak point, something 3d printing doesn't have to deal with.

 

aerospace has been a big adopter of 3d printing since they need such small part runs and have extreme strength and mass requirements.
