ca 1971 ignition key . . .

This puppy has not had the ignition  key turned for 15 + years. Starting from fully CCW and turning CW it makes one "click" step and then another "click" step.

No position seems to be spring loaded.  What should each position actually do? Is there something I should try spraying into the ignition key slot?

I would, speaking of keys. I need to cut a new back up for my 107 86 560sl. Do you know where I go to do that. Thanks

I don't know what year BMW started putting in the steering wheel lock but if yours has it you may not be able to go beyond two positions.  May have to wiggle the steering back and forth to get the ignition to turn beyond locked position.

Yup, prevents you from engaging the starter again. Normal, mine does the same. Switch is sometimes flakey, I replaced mine a few years ago with a NOS one and kept the old one in reserve. In my old days I'll have time to solder contacts when they are NLA.
