BMW 1800 TISA

Time for a update on TiSA #133 progress.

1.  Carbs are back from restoration by Pierce Manifolds.  Some pictures below.

2.  Engine is about a month out from completion.  Byron is looking for a NOS or really good thermostat.  We have the housing, but there's something unique about the T-stat itself, so please let me know if anyone has a lead.  Byron explained it to me, but I'm not sure I understood it well enough to repeat.  Those of you in the know will know.

3.  Car body will go out for blasting followed by needed metalwork in about a month.

4.  Looks like Bryan Purves (UK) will be building the bucket seats.  Communication with Gareth Richards fell off.  Bryan has a seat to work from, and we're making some headway toward this goal.

5.  Car had the original water pump, which is apparently remarkable, but a newer version will have to be used since it isn't possible to rebuild the old one.

6.  Byron also is looking for a suitable fuel pump in case anyone has a lead on one.

Nick, thanks for lead on T-stat.  Yes, I was disappointed I couldn't keep something going with Gareth.  Initially he was responsive, even sending me a red vinyl sample.  The pictures of his seats looked very nice.

Regarding the fuel pump, I'm not informed enough except to say that Byron told me it attaches near the engine and is visible (i.e., not in the fuel tank).  Sounds like most of what's available is ok for 2002's but not a '65 NK.  I'll try to talk with him again for more specifics.

+1 with Nick's advice.

The "gooseneck" fuel pumps are fairly common and many are rebuildable with kits from air-cooled VW suppliers. New ones are available from Blunt and other popular suppliers. They are used on the e3 cars like a Bavaria.

Hi Bill,

I sent Terry the photos of the decal inside the fuel door on #193 today.

Re fuel pumps- I have found with my car that after it sits for a few days the stock fuel pump doesn't have enough suck to start the motor before the battery gives out unless I prime the float chambers before I try to start it. We are considering hiding a 356 Porsche 6 V pump down under the car somewhere to pre-charge the mechanical pump before I try to start it.

Just a thought.

I bought this pump from W&N for my ti recently.  Interestingly, it came in an old Pierburg box marked made in West Germany.  I don't know if these are truly NOS or not.  The pump itself looks like the photo, like new.

However, I don't know if this is the correct pump for a tisa.

If not, you might try Carl Nelson, He still has a lot of old parts on his shelf.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
