Minnesota Road Racers' Happy Hour '17

Recommended Posts

Passing this on.

This is not an '02 event, nor even a BMW.  But there will plenty of people interested in both.  Yeah it's about racing,  but more than that it's an opportunity to get together, talk cars and drink in the cold, dark abyss of the Minnesota winter.   So if you don't race and it ain't your thing....still come!   If you have ever wanted to race but not sure how...definitely come and see what's what and say hi.  There will be a few guys from the local vintage club there I'm sure.

Poor Richard's Commonhouse
8301 Normandale Blvd., Bloomington, Minnesota 55437

Saturday, February 11 at 6 PM - 9 PM

It's cold. Cold enough to remind you that we're all weird for actually living up here. The good news is that it will probably be even colder in February. You probably need to work on your car, but let's just be honest and acknowledge that won't be happening until your teammates coax you into the garage a week before your next race.

Until then, come on out to Poor Richard's in Bloomington on February 11th for the Supposed-to-be-Annual MN Road Racers' Happy Hour! (Yes, this should have happened in 2016, but planning is not my strong suit, nor is understanding words....like annual) We'll have screens available for video so bring your race footage for everyone's entertainment and uninvited criticism. There will be good conversation, bench racing, outright lies, and maybe even some bragging. We'll have swag from World Racing Leagueand CHUMPCAR World Series as well as representatives from NASA (racing), Land O' Lakes Region SCCA-racing.com, and anyone else who happens to wander through the door. Your participation is encouraged and if you fail to attend we will be disappointed but will only talk about it behind your back, in the most Minnesota way possible. Also we love you, miss you, and have totally (maybe) forgiven that time you ran us wide into the dirt off T2 at Brainerd. We also like to meet new people, so feel free to invite your friends and neighbors, and all the great track workers who help make our sport possible!

No cost to walk through the door, but food and drink is on you! No details on door prizes and all that yet, but we'll try to line up some cool stuff. Be sure to plan a sober driver if you plan to partake, and an Uber if you don't trust your sober driver to fulfill their singular duty.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
