For '70-'71 four blues were available according to info I have.

Atlantik (paint code 041)

Riviera (paint code 036)

Baikal Metallic

Nachtblau Metallic

My vote is Riviera BUT wait until you hear from Germany.

And I believe Nachtblau was only listed as available on the big coupes for most years.  Yes, Les?

Best regards,

Steve

If it's metallic, then it's gotta be Baikal.  That was one of the two optional metallic colors in 1969-70 (the other was Polaris).  If it's not metallic, then it could be either Riviera or Atlantic.  Atlantic is a much darker blue; Riviera is lighter, pastel and almost Wedgewood blue.  I can't recall having seen a 1970 car painted Riviera, come to think of it.

And FYI, the metallic glitter from Baikal doesn't show up nearly as prominently inside the trunk and other places where the factory used schutz.

Were it mine, I'd wait to hear from BMW Classic...

Just found this photo of your trunk when the car was for sale July 2014.

That is impressive. I would love to see the ad, can you post the link? How were you able to find that?!?!

Yeah I really think it is Riviera. I meant to take a photo of the inside of the pillar between the two side windows. The bare pillar is exposed after i removed the rear side windows. The color on the pillar for sure has not been painted.

02Les nailed it, Riviera from the trunk photo.

Yep.  I suspect Les, and his trunk photo, nailed it, unless even the trunk's been previously hit by some re-painting.  But I'd certainly still wait for BMW Archives....

Riviera is shown in the December 1970 (XII. 1970) global, all-models, paint and upholstery brochure (attached below), but I have no brochures in my collection from between December 1968 (in essence, the 1969 brochure) and December 1970 (in essence, the 1971 brochure), which is probably when Riviera first appeared.  (Although I also hear and concur with Mike S. that Riviera would be a rare color on a 1970 model.)

I'd say you're in a win-win-win position: all three of the likely blues, Riviera, Baikal, and Atlantic, are absolutely gorgeous colors!

Regards,

Steve

The Riviera car Mark shows above (CA plate) is the same one I almost bought - twice!  It is a 71.

I'm partial to this color :D

It's a great color.  I also like your combo of Riviera and Tobacco!

BMW's "eye" for color combos wasn't always the best: Atlantic, Riviera, and Baikal Metallic all specified Black interiors as the standard factory configuration, but -- certainly in my opinion -- the most stunning examples I've seen have generally had Tobacco interiors (think of COOP's Baikal and your Riviera)!

Best regards,

Steve

I just heard back from BMW Classic and my educated guess was in fact correct. The car is Riviera Blue. Thank you everyone for the helpful feedback.

"The BMW 2002 US VIN 1671544 was manufactured on January 29th, 1970 and delivered on February 02nd, 1970 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Riviera, paint code 036."

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
