Front struts 2000tilux

So my bilstien front shocks came in the other day and immediately prompted me to start the process. First time I've ever worked on steering related items. Most of my experience is within the motor area. I managed to get the strut out with little issue but I did manage to break a bolt off on the bottom of the strut (common issue I later discovered)

I think I'll just get the machine shop to get that out for me and perhaps change all the bolts in the process.

Here is a pic of the filthy strut and the beautiful bilstien that ultimately going in once I sand blast and repaint it.

That bolt is snapped off your ball joint, which IMO you should replace regardless when you've stripped everything down. You'll have to separate the steering arm from the strut - penetrating oil from the top will help (the bores go all the way through). You'll then find the rusted bolt that holds the ball joint, more oil cleaning and care not to round it off (only thin sockets will drop down far enough to get a good purchase).

They're the same across the whole NK and 02 range. There are a few OEM part number sites where you can look up a part number and then click the 'i' for info to see what other vehicles it applies to:

NAZ- you might want to check your local auto parts stores or even Canadian Tire for parts. Ordering direct from the US to Canada invites extra shipping costs; excise and duty; and the courier companies whack you with a brokerage fee. Nothing against 2002AD, but I've used BMAparts over the years. They ship free in US so in my case, I drive 80km to border town and UPS office there. BMA has also mailed things by US Post to Canada on request since I find post office sometimes forgets to collect duty and tax on low cost items. Rockauto is another good alternative. GetBMWparts is a good source of OEM parts, but they prefer to ship in US.

Bavauto is always worth checking. They ship to Canada but above warning applies.

On the strut front, what kind of penetrating oil are you using? I like PB Blaster. Those old fittings need be soaked repeatedly for a day. Propane torch is handy to heat up rusted nuts. Go slow in winding them off. Turn out a bit, then back a bit then out a bit more. Wire brush the rust.

Hans, it would never occurred to me to go to Canadian tire for parts. I'd be very surprised if they had anything. I do agree with you however, I am subject to the duty at times. I used to buy all my 2002 parts in Canada locally 20 years ago but it's just so convenient to have things shipped to my office when I'm traveling so much. Saves me time running around town and more time at home when I'm in town. I'm currently in Vegas so when I get back I should have a bunch of parts waiting for me.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
