215mm or 228mm clutch on a '72 2002

I did a bunch of searching and found some conflicting info.

 

Background: I have a 1972 2002 (non-tii) VIN 2584644, build date July 26 1972. I'm planning on eventually replacing the clutch, etc and want to order all the necessary parts before-hand, rather than pulling the tranny and then ordering the parts (and possibly putting up with the old "sorry: out-of-stock" situation). But I'm not sure if I'll need parts for a 215mm or 228mm clutch. Given this data, does anyone know for sure if I'll need 215mm or 228mm parts? BavAuto only has one Sachs clutch kit listed for all 2002s, and it doesn't specify which size.

I thought the 215 coincided more or less with square taillights.  

 

But you never know what you'll find in there:  many years ago, I bought a race car.  And a spare clutch for it,

since I didn't know how old the clutch was.  Not knowing which size, I also brought along a flywheel to match the clutch.

It was a race car, right, so I guessed 228mm.  

 

Well, that was all well and good, but the two flywheels have different length bolts- guess what I didn't bring along,

the time the clutch broke in Spokanistan??

 

I'd take it apart first, to see.  If you really need to be sure, order both, send one back.

All roundie 2002s came with 228mm clutches (unless a PO changed the flywheel).  All US squarelights except tii's (and Turbos) came with 215mm clutches (unless changed); they retained the 228mm clutches.  

 

So, yours has a 228mm clutch.  Bav Auto should know which clutch your car takes simply by the year.

 

BTW your VIN is close to the end of '72 production (at 2585138).

Unless you have owned the car since new there is no way to know for sure. Both clutches are readily available but I would contact Blunt and make sure he can ship what you need as soon as you get it apart. Blunt has been "one of us" for a long time and has always worked with me when I needed stuff on short notice.  Also don't forget to order a Throwout and pilot bearing and make sure whoever surfaces your flywheel knows it has a step surfaced into it, alot of shops will surface it flat and not bother checking the spec.

This happened to me on my 69. I bought new flywheel bolts but they were too short for the 228mm flywheel.  Also- the clutch alignment tool (typically plastic) for an air cooled VW will not work with the BMW clutch disk - but the VW flywheel lock tool will work (it has dual patterns for VW's 180 and 200 mmflywheels).
