The NW Alfa Club hosted a list minute track day today. There was actually an Alfa there this time. Only four of us signed up, so that was pretty cool as a driver, not so good for the Alfa Club. The 911, e46, and a new Giulia behind them were the rest of the group.

It was a bit wet out there, but they posted it as "The Art of Driving in the Rain" and it lived up to its name.

Good practice for me. Lots of oversteer when I tried to use 3rd gear on slower parts of the track. It was a hair’s difference between maintenance throttle and overpowering the tires. Left it in 4th for the 2nd and 3rd session and that allowed for better modulation of the throttle. I did 3-45 minute sessions (with so few drivers they just sent us out as a group on the hour but pulled us in at 10 minutes till for breaks) and felt like I got my money’s worth, so headed home rather than going out for the 4th session. It was nice having a private track.

With the new springs and camber bushings, it seemed like I got a bit more understeer at turn in if I didn’t trail brake into the corners. Will be interesting to see if that trait continues on a dry track.

The 2002, even with the turbo, is far easier to drive in the wet. Mostly because of power delivery, but I’m sure 1700lbs less weight helps too.

Signed up for a track day Saturday, but pads were getting thin, so swapped them for a fresh set.

Old pads were pretty thin after 15k miles and 7 track days.

Pads on this car are huge. Here’s one next to a pad from the 2002 (Volvo calipers)

Saved the old pads in case I decide to send them off for a proper track compound to be applied. Not many aftermarket options for this car, so went with a new OEM set.

Experimented with video at The Ridge Motorsports Park on Saturday. Here’s one of the few open laps I got. We had close to 25 cars per run group, so it was crowded.

SS got new wheels. I’m happy with how they look. They’re supposed to be a few pounds lighter than the OE wheels, too.

It looks like you are having a ton of fun with this car.

I am. I’ll admit to having long held prejudices against modern GM cars, and this car is far from perfect when it comes to quality of the interior comfort and convenience features, but I forget all that when I put my right door to the floor or get it on a twisty back road. And the simple, robust power train leaves me with none of the post-warranty fears that go with a modern German car.

I’ve even...looked at camaros and mustangs recently.

Sigh.  Yeah - I get it.  On the other hand, I am becoming more of a curmudgeon.  We just got home from a ski trip, and on that trip, I rented a Chrysler Pacifica minivan.  Hauled 6 people and a ton of luggage, 25 mpg, super comfortable.  Took me 15 min to find the key fob that they had haphazardly thrown on the dash (car would start with the button, so I knew it was in the car).  Touch screen everything.  Shifter was a dial on the dash.

And I realized, technology has passed me.  I don't want a new anything.  Even the new Porsche's are drive by wire.  No thank you.

There’s a place in my garage for both modern and classic cars. Each helps me appreciate the other more.

I will say there are a lot of modern cars I’d never own, while there are very few classic cars I wouldn’t consider owning at some point in my life.

Another track day video. I just got back from a weekend at Oregon Raceway Park. If I ever feel like I’ve mastered this track, I’ll be surprised. But once I got the rhythm, it was a ton of fun.

I finally killed the OE tires at my last track day, so ran square 275’s this weekend. Since it was my first time there, I don’t have a true benchmark, but the square setup seems to have decreased the understeer quite a bit vs the OE 245/275 setup. Looking forward to getting back to afamiliar track next month so I have a better comparison.

Just finished up day one of two at Laguna Seca. We’re running with NCRC, which is giving me my first exposure to open point by passing. Pretty fun track and it’s nice not having traffic bunch up waiting for the next let by zone.

Well, I’m no longer a Chevy owner. Picked up an M2 last week. I’ve been working on accumulating 1,200 miles so I can get it in for the break in service next week before my first track day on July 6.

How’s the front seat? I sat in an M2 at the auto show, and I thought the seat was way too narrow and kind of uncomfortable. M4 seat was much better.

Not that I’m buying either of them....

It’s a bit tight, but the added support will be nice on track. I was sliding all over in the SS. They’re also power adjustable, so may have been in ‘slim’ mode when you sat in it.

i did a few drives over the last week to get 1200 miles in before a track day this coming Friday. So I spent a fair bit of time in the driver’s seat recently. The photo above is from one of my drives. I also drove to Ellensburg for dinner after work last week.

OK - I need more.  I have a friend who has an SS that was tuned by Lingenfelter, and now he's thinking about going to an M2.

So - why did you switch?  What do you like/dislike about both cars?

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
