Welcome to 1976 BMW 2002 ownership in California.  Every 2 years you will need a smog check for your 1976 and newer cars unless pending legislation pushes the cutoff date forward.  Finding a "friendly" smog shop in your area is a possibility, (I would check some of the hot rod or tuner forums), but they aren't going to commit fraud and risk losing their license.  In some cases, the "friendly" independent shops I have dealt with would cut me some slack on the visual inspection (not having a stock air cleaner and summer box connection), while others are extremely diligent that everything needs to be correct before the sniff test.  Now that these tests are subject to an idle test and a dyno test for emissions, they are much harder to pass.

If I were in your shoes, I would hook up your existing smog setup, (replace the smog pump to gulp valve hose), confirm that all the valves on the firewall were hooked up according to the emission diagram, replace the spark plugs, set the dwell and timing, lean out the carb and try to pass.  If you pass, you are home free, if you don't, you will need to re-evaluate your situation and decide to fix the issues or punt.

IMHO,

does anyone know where i can find a list of all the smog parts needed for 76 california?

A Chiltons manual as well as the emissions decal in the engine bay (if still there) will show you the schematic calling out the parts.

I have a bunch of SMOG stuff like a thermo reactor manifold, air pump and bracket, diverter valve, the piping, gas canister, relays, etc... When you know or figure out what's missing and what you need, shoot me a PM

I also have a CARB approved bolt-on Weber carb tag to ward off those Voodoo smog techs.

I see you bought that $1,500 76 out of Half Moon Bay.

Recaros and a sport wheel not to mention it runs.

Nice buy, if not for the parts alone.

I thought about it for a minute, then came to my senses.

FYI, the Weber CARB "tag" is just that, the tag which attaches to the carburetor and shows it is CA legal.

Hahah yeah I actually live in half moon bay. So theoretically I could buy a carb tag and put it on there

I too considered that '76, just for the Recaro's, steering wheel and door panels.  But then sanity, in the form of "wife", intervened :-)

Oddly, the posting is still up on CL.

Hahaha, that almost happened to me to. But in my case it was my dad. A lot of convincing lol.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
