The mysterious "Solder Joint 19"

Hi,

 

The wiring schematics for the later cars shows a solder junction (19) where battery positive connects to.  This must be the primary node for feeding 12 volts to the rest of the circuits.  Where exactly is this joint located and can it be exposed to add additional wires to?

 

I need to extend the wire that comes out of the harness and connects to the battery post (anode).  Best I can measure that mangled stub, it is an OD of 5 mm.  I'm not finding an ISO wire size that matches so if anyone can advise what this is, I'd be grateful.  What kind of termination did the factory have on this wire?  Mine has obviously been modified/abused.

I don't have the schematic handy, and not sure I could read it properly, but I thought I'd add a picture to either help or confuse the issue more. :o

 

Are you referring to the origin of the "system" wire? Mine is (likely) 5mm of stranded copper.   The original terminal clamp is long gone, but maybe the primary node was soldered to it.  I hope this might help a little.

That is wire/cable from battery positive terminal to starter. Mine was a hacked job so I replaced it with

Insert the cble into the barrel and aim torch to the barrel for a couple of seconds, twist cable little bit and it is done.

Yes, that's the wire I'm referring to.  Mine is short and needs to be extended.  I may just use a 4 AWG wire and overkill it.

My starter wire is not the issue as that will be replaced by eyelet connectors

Yes it is a little fore of that area. It is a copper crimp that holds all the positive line together. I once had a ground issue that melted up to that point and had to expose, rewire and rewrap.

I may do the same; pull the wire out till the crimp and rewrap.  That will make for a more direct line to the battery positive which is going to be in a new spot with the ETX30L battery.

For a while I considered the possibility of using the VW fusible link box that sits atop the battery.  It provides a number of screw terminals that are fused.  Spare terminals can be used for adding an electric radiator fan or foglights, etc.  There are no really good power takeoffs in the 2002 harness, unfortunately.

 

I planned to run a heavy (4 AWG) cable to the VW box, which has a nice entry stud and then feed everything from there, including the car's main line.
