Weber 40 Sidedraft question

I have a set of weber 40's on my car, the problem is the chokes, or starting circut. I disassembled them to put in a rebuild kit they are working fine except the chokes.

When I pull the choke it stalls the motor immediatly, unlike before when I pulled the choke it nicely increased the rpm. I'm wondering if anyone has any idea what I did wrong and where I should begin to solve this problem.

I have to admit, I've never messed with them except to make sure they aren't leaking.  Bekuz racekarr....

 

"immediately dies" sounds like they're either dumping a ton of fuel, or leaking a ton of air.

As long as the pistons are synchronized, there's not a ton that can go wrong with them if

they're moving up and down with the linkage.  The linkage inside the carb's a bit

low- quality- is it possible you bent something, or got one of the lifting fingers on the wrong groove in the piston?

Hello,

You don't need chokes on 40 or 45 DCOE's. They start so easy that I never used the chokes. Even in cold weather conditions they tend to give too much fuel and are just not needed...

I built about 3 DCOE engines for myself and friends and never put a cable at the choke.

Spoken like a true Californian...

 

If a 40/45 is tuned right, in colder climates the choke circuit makes life a lot easier on a street car.

Cold or warm weather if the car has not run for a couple days it requires lots of peddle pumping to get it started. Before I messed with it it just fired right up

with a bit of choke. Thanks for the input when get around to it I'll try a few things out hopefully it's a simple fix.

I find using the chokes makes starting much easier than whanging away on the gas peddle. A few turns, it fires cleanly. I had to run a universal choke cable around the front to get the arms pulling in the right direction. California might be a different situation.
