Is there a Correct Way to Install SS Rocker Trim?!

Presume you're using the current design tabs, which are different from the ones BMW originally supplied and are also used on E21s.  First of all make sure you've pushed the pin--that's in the center of the tab--all the way in "till it's flush with the tab body.  That will keep the mounting tab from coming out of the body.

Two small tricks that have worked for me:

1.  put a little dab of silicone grease or vaseline on the tab to ease the trim onto the tab

2.  slip the lower edge of the trim onto the tab, then use a rubber mallet to tap the upper edge onto the tab.  Much easier than trying to force both on at the same time.

Best way is to have the correct clips

I have some clips, pm me if interested

yes, the black OEM 2002 rocker trim clips !!

not the "pos" white junk ones !!!!

and I've always just used my hand as opposed to a mallet,

gives me the feel of how hard to smack the trim

  • 2 weeks later...

You have to install clips first as you must fasten them to car

- your problem is using wrong clips

it should take 5 to 10 min to Install clips & trim both sides !!

Instead of using the plastic plugs, I substituted an allen set screw which really locks the clips into place--and they are easily removed.  6Mx10 worked great (3/16" a little too big).  Try pulling up on the lower edge of the trim to really set it in place before smacking the top.

Here is an aftermarket clip that I was told is the same size as the OEM clips that are NLA, and they are only $13.95 for package of 25 clips.

Good find !!  Part # matches 51 13 6 440 146

I really doubt that it fits VW, but sure is what's needed for 2002

I just bought the original BMW part kit to do both sides from RogersTii ... $22.95 so they are available.

I don't see the rocker trim clip in that kit.

The stainless steel is hard to wrestle with. Lots have had issues with it.

Mine's still in a box in the garage.

Good luck,

Ray

Stop reading this! Don't you have anything better to do?? :P
Two running things. Two broken things.

Any damage to the rockers resulting in having had to replace them, and/or drill new holes, add filler or straighten panels will only complicate the process if not make it impossible to use the factory clips whether or not they are or are not the original type.  This applies more to if you find the stainless pieces won't say on and not if you can't get them to clip on in the first place.  I haven't found an alternative.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
