Mr. AlpinA got some paint......

After a long, long, long (long, long) really long time, the alpina car finally has paint on him.  Couldn't do the black, just too hard to do on a race car that has a body largely made up of fiberglass panels (and true it probably still would have been better than it was back in 1975).  White was the first paint and the way Quester drove it in '74 (and 99% of everything i have photographically is the white color).  They had a little fixing to do and then the stripes (+ trunk, engine bay and interior), then its coming back home to me where I will do a good bit of assembly (although with fresh paint and cold weather, probably going to let it sit a bit and cure out before i do much), camera phone pic is all I have for now, better ones to come.

Really great news!  Man, it's been a long time since your first post on the topic.

Once that is home, its time to open that special bottle of something, pull up a chair next to it, and just sip.

Congrats, car looks incredible.

Putting that first coat--even of primer--on a body that's full of repaired spots, various colors of old, sanded down paint and varicolored spot priming and then have it emerge all one color is very gratifying--makes you think (falsely!) that you're on the home stretch.  We all know better...

Maybe not on home stretch but it is a turning point for sure. No more messy jobs, just putting on nice and shiny parts! It gives all new motivation.

Remember it probably only took about a day in BMW's factory for a car to be fully assembled down the production line.

You have got 5.

It it is a very special one after all :D

Looking good, can't wait for an in-car camera shot as it does hot laps somewhere.

I was so far off thinking I was going to bring the car to Monterey this summer, just way too much to do and at the end of the day would have had to pay someone to do my hobby for me (and it would have been expensive), really looking forward to getting it back and starting to put it back together.  The body work especially the rear wasn't easy to do, the panels have very subtle body lines in them that essentially wrap the entire  chassis and tie into the body lines on the doors front to back.  I hadn't really tied it all together when I was working on it.  Fortunately the guy doing the work has an Alpina car with the same body work on it as mine (body work done by Alpina) so he basically has the template to refer to.

Wow, it's coming along very nicely Mark! Congrats on the forward progress!

Has your body ? guy made any progress on his car? I'm sure I speak for many here that it'd be awesome to see his car finished and racing as well!

Thanks.

No, I don't believe so.  It may be that finishing my car off will motivate him to do his.  Everytime I am there, the shop is overflowing with cars (body shop business seems to be good).

Before mine went on the rack, they were side by side which is pretty cool, missed photo op.  The front fenders weren't that big a deal to do, the rears were really a mother + add to the fact that the car had been raced (and crashed) + modified, cut up, drilled etc.,there was a lot of work to do, really looking forward to seeing the end product.

Whatever fixin' got fixed, spoiler is about to go on and then the stripes.  So buried at work at the moment would really like to beat it up there and take some pics, camera phone's will have to suffice for now.  Maybe Friday, unfortunately we are supposed to get heavy rain, 1st of the year which means amateur hour on the freeways.  At this point I can't wait to get the car back, its been gone a long while now.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
